When to Run? Balancing Descretion with Heroism

Well, I for one understand your question, but it is disappointing that this ends up being the case. What the quote above means to me is that 90% of the time your party does not consist of heroes to begin with, which is truly unfortunate. Just this last week, running a barbarian, my...

what would you be in the dungeons and Dragons world?

Good points. I have been tested, but they are all relative anyway and there are so many different tests now...who knows if any of them are actually accurate? It does not really matter anyway, make my Int a '3' it is only a number. :D

what would you be in the dungeons and Dragons world?

Good-natured response: ;) Since I was one of those that fit your description, I would rather not be the one to point it out, but on the off chance no one else does... here goes. It is generally believed that 1% fall into the "very smart +" catagory and that .01% fall into the "even smarter"...

what would you be in the dungeons and Dragons world?

There was a DM that I adventured with roughly 20 years ago that had us run characters just like this. He had found ways to measure most of the stats, and yes, it took us a couple of weeks to test for all of them. Strength was easy, just see how much you can lift over your head and divide by 10...

    How many times...?

I will confess that I only read this thread to this point, so if anyone already mentioned this I apologize. The section I underlined above is what I would have focused on myself. Something may be behind the "insanity" in which case the old woman was just a victim herself and you very much...

    Limiting Gesault

Gestalts are easier and less complicated than I think people tend to make them. For your first question, they are allowed to take feats from whatever sources are agreed upon before the campaing begins and the DM has the last say if a feat is acceptible or not. As for your second question, and...

Any advice on running a low-magic-item campaign?

Frankly, I do not understand why people have a hard time doing this. For the record, the groups I have run talk more fondly of the low magic games than they do the "everyone is a god by 20th level" games. Anyway, to answer your questions: For treasure you just need to calculate their monthly...

Gestalt: What to Fear as a GM

Let me see... I have been running a gestalt campaign for almost 2 years. The characters currently range from 14th to 16th level. There is a rogue/monk, paladin/sorceror, wizard/bard, fighter/cleric and a wizard/fighter. In the past there was also a barbarian/bard and a fighter/rogue. I did not...

New Item, Bracers of Archer's Strength

Be imaginative. Maybe it only works for single classed archers or requires the feats precise shot and point blank shot, etc. Sorry, the money thing with magic items just annoys me.

New Item, Bracers of Archer's Strength

Just a thought. Why not require a concentration check (or some other check) to "bend" the bow using the magic of the bracers and set the DC to (off the top of my head 15 + 1 for each STR bonus of the bow. So to get a full +20 from a bow based on a STR of 50 (I think that was an example I saw)...

    D&D Minis: What's missing most?

I have no "real" problem with random packs, but I would like to see the catagories of each set reduced. For instance sets that are just humanoids where the rares are rare encountered humanoids, then the same for magical beasts, then elementals, etc. That way you would still have your "we can...

Where did % to stablize come from?

Interesting idea but isn't Toughness a feat that you can take multiple times? Do you just say you get the stabilization bonus the first time? Perhaps you could tweek this a bit so they get +3% (or so) added to their chance to stabilize each time it is taken.

Where did % to stablize come from?

We have been using a % equal to your CON score to stabilize; so a 16 CON equates to a 16% chance. We have also tried 10+CON score% and class HD+CON% (so a fighter with a CON of 15 wouild have a 25% chance to stabilize) and we have used LVL+CON%. To make things seem more consistant we have always...

Would it be mean for me to have Potions of Inflict Serious Wounds as treasure?

Everyone should try this at least once. The encounter I ran was with a lich who made himself look "living" and used potions labeled 'heal' that contained cause serious wounds which killed one wounded character, knocked one to negatives and brought one close to 0 (the fact that they drank them at...

Official Tomb of Horrors 3.5 conversion (merged)

Interesting. Just goes to show you never truly know about people. My experience was 2 non-hackers who loved it and 22 hackers who hated it. Interesting indeed.

Official Tomb of Horrors 3.5 conversion (merged)

Though I cannot say this is absolutely true without performing extensive research, I would say that the "love-hate" relationship would probably be divided by problem solvers-hack and slashers. Originally in the 70's I was one of two players who attempted this module with a DM. I ran a magic user...

    How do you determine hitpoints?

I've been doing it the same way for twenty(muffle) years. At frist level HPs equal CON score or max die + CON modifier, use highest of the two. At second level max die + CON modifier Every other level is based on the class die: d4 becomes d2 + 2 d6 becomes d3 + 3 d8 becomes d4 + 4 d10 becomes...

    A riddle

Since an 'oxymoron' is a contracted paradox, whoever said paradox was very close. If you defined these as a figure of speech it would be an 'antithesis.'

Suggestion on a mount for a Dwarf Paladin?

A giant lizard or a cave bear would be appropriate for underground adventuring.
