What are you reading in 2025?

King Lear is probably my favorite Shakespeare work. And my favorite performance is this one: It's got one heck of a cast, including James Earl Jones, Raul Julia, and Rene Auberjonois.

Shadowrun: How can they properly use Native Americans?

Hahahahahah, brilliant! That also shows a sense of humor and a lack of preciousness about his work. He clearly loves the genre, but is still able to lampoon it. I hopped off not long after 2e came out, then years later tried 5e and found it not to my liking. I dig Shadowrun Anarchy, but it's...

    Should Wizardry Require Player Intelligence?

I don't know about player intelligence, but every player, regardless of character creation choices, should know what their characters abilities do. And it's a really hard thing to tactfully tell a player that maybe they aren't ready to play that particularly complicated class, and go with the...

What are you reading in 2025?

I would go with The Lords of Quarmall or Ill Met in Lankhmar, if you haven't already given those a shot. If sci-fi is more your thing, maybe The Night of the Long Knives.

D&D General [ART THREAD]Your Personal Favorite D&D Art For a Monster

Love it. The designs on the LJN D&D toys were tops in my book. Bold colors and designs. This one is probably a big part of why I love carrion crawlers:

Likewise, his stuff doesn't do much for me. Maybe it's his thing with spiders.

    Best Tolkien Art

"Author of Heartthrob in Hobbiton," ahahahahahahah! He's looks like when he'd open his mouth, Dom DeLuise's voice would come out.

    White Dwarf Reflections #7

I think baking power advancement into level advancement is part of 5e's secret sauce. That being said, I still find myself handing out more magic items than the baseline amount.

What is Amazon’s beef with DCC?

I mean, DCC does have a table for minor corruption...

Is Losing your Turn The Worst That Can Happen

Yeah, they paid to sit there not playing Shadowrun. I was aghast. In hindsight, we should've all just stopped and shown some solidarity at the table. But it was one of those things so far beyond the pale that I think we were all a little flummoxed by it. One of the reasons I stopped playing in...

    Best Tolkien Art

My first Tolkien read unfortunately had this cover:

Is Losing your Turn The Worst That Can Happen

Agreed. Depending on the number of players and the game, it can take anywhere from 5-20 minutes until you get a chance to do something. If you sit out more than three rounds, that easily spills into over a half an hour of sitting there not playing the game. And no one enjoys that. At a con game...

    White Dwarf Reflections #7

That is a very important point. In 1e and 2e, magic items were very much a part of how you increased your power, whereas now, leveling up provides way more.

    White Dwarf Reflections #7

It's interesting that the most recent edition of D&D has moved in the direction of having fewer magic items. When you look at older editions, there are so much more handed out. And I totally agree that you shouldn't be able to waltz into Ye Olde Magic Shoppe and buy a flametongue.

    Best Tolkien Art

I love the Barbara Remington LOTR triptych: Was hoping someone would mention this one. Seeing it in comic and book stores made a big impact on me.

    General DCC RPG thread

I did not. I had just purchased a new hardcopy of the core book, and as much as its cover is darn cool, couldn't justify it.

    General DCC RPG thread

I got my Purple Planet crowdfunding package yesterday. Combining the official Purple Planet release, plus a bunch of third-party products, was super-ambitious. But Goodman Games and everyone else pulled it off. Looking forward to all the Purple Planet goodness. Being a huge fan of Barsoom, I...
