WotC WotC needs an Elon Musk

I was talking about 4e Darksun; Planescape would have been hard pressed to ret-con that 2 editions prior. Anyway, I have edited "4e" into my post to make it clear.

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure spell slots predate 1e and go all the way back to OD&D (the concept if not the exact terminology). Otherwise, good breakdown. EDIT: Although now I think about it, I am not sure when "slots" became official terminology. I started with 2e, and I am pretty...

WotC WotC needs an Elon Musk

Forgotten Realms got move to the World Axis. Eberron kept its own cosmology (with the addition of Baator for some bizarre reason). Not sure what 4e Dark Sun said about cosmology, but since being cut off is a big part of its shtick, it does not matter too much which cosmology it is cut off from...

D&D 5E (2024) What do you think of the new rules for preparing spells?

Whereas before "you literally just look at the Spellcasting page of your character sheet" and see one number, then prepare* that many spells. Once. Not up to nine times. Going through the same process nine times cannot be easier than doing it once. That would be a point in its favour in my...

D&D 5E (2024) What do you think of the new rules for preparing spells?

Looking up N numbers, where N is 1+, and choosing N sets of spells is easier than looking up one number (or just trivially calculating it) and choosing that number of spells? I don't think so. And making the two (still independent) things use the same number is going to make it less confusing...

D&D 5E (2024) What do you think of the new rules for preparing spells?

"Easier"? It look a lot fiddlier to me!

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

Oh wow. I had not heard about that one, so I just DDGed up an article on it (or rather on its removal/banning along with half a dozen others). The article itself was fine, but the comments.... Ilithids are an interesting case. If the had to eat the brains of sapient beings to survive, then you...

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

I would go further than that: I would say the for a creature to be categorised as evil, it must have a degree of moral responsibility for its actions. Creatures without free will lack that, and therefore cannot be evil, although they may be destructive and dangerous.

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

I know it is not the same, which is why I was suggesting it as a possible alternative explanation for the recent changes. EDIT: TBF, I suspect both motivations are in play. My suggested motivation is in play for at least some of the people directly involved, but yours is how they sell it to...

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

Is it so impossible to think that their priority is "avoiding harm to marginalised groups"?

    D&D 5E (2024) Brainstorming 5 minute work day fixes

Refocus is a specific activity, not a generic short rest, but to be fair it is probably close enough for government work. More significantly, focus points are fungible - even if you have ten focus spells, you can spend all your focus points spamming the same one three times. With actual...

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

Because the problems with inherently evil species are doylist, and cannot be addressed with a watsonian answer. Magic does not exist in the real world, and therefore cannot be the answer to real-world issues.

    D&D 5E (2024) Brainstorming 5 minute work day fixes

It has decent at-wills, but it literally does not have straight encounter powers AFAICR. Focus points are are the closest it has to encounter powers, but even though you can spend one per encounter with impunity, the ability to spend more than that has a daily limit. At least until your can...

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

I don't see how anything I said is contrary to @Dannyalcatraz's guidance (assuming that is what you are referring to and there wasn't some other mod post that I missed), but perhaps you are right. "Discretion is the better part of valour", after all. Edited.

    D&D 5E (2024) Brainstorming 5 minute work day fixes

This does not match my experience with 5e (which admittedly is somewhat limited), in that I never succesfully completed a long rest in the middle of a day. The only times it happened were when encounters were spread out across days, so each was followed by a long rest anyway. Which is to say, I...

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

The reasons you give are (some of) the reasons I think "species" is vastly superior to "ancestry". But OTOH I think ancestry works as a slot in replacement in every sentance that would have used "race", which puts it way above most of the options listed. AIUI, they claim to have consulted...

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

Well I do believe it. And more to the point, a lot of people who study the subject and a lot of the people directly affected by it believe it, and I believe them. With the irony that, at least in some interpretations of cladistic taxonomy, whales are back to being fish again (and all the other...

WotC WotC needs an Elon Musk

FR (as a published setting) used the the GW before it used anything else. There is no "forcing". In a lot of cases, evidence is vitally important, but when talking about feelings not so much. No evidence is required for how you feel about various cosmologies, and no amount of evidence is going...

To the extent that they exist at all, presumably yes, although for the most part they seem to be going away entirely.
