D&D 5E (2014) Skills in 5E. Do we want them?

Played a retroclone last week with new D&D players using a system nearly identical to this (essentially the same system we used back in 1984). Worked so well that I actually resent my next 4e skill challenge.

    Class Balance - why?

Exactly. All other considerations aside, role-playing is a group activity. Sucking for a few weeks and then dominating the game is untenable in 2012.

Pathfinder 1E is a big Pathfinder surge on the way?

I believe "step back" refers to Pathfinder being much more closely related to 3.5 than 4e. Since 3.5 predated 4e, this it is a 'step back' to an earlier incarnation of D&D. Not inferior, simply older.

The return of the Male Human Fighter!

I don't know if it's true, but I *want* it to be true.

    D&D 5E (2014) No ascending bonuses: A mathematical framework for 5e

I was proposing that bonuses be drastically reduced (but by 1/2 or 4/5ths, for example)---but dropping them altogether is fairly intriguing. Giving this some thought.

Traps: What Should Become of the Spike-Filled Pit?

Couldn't agree more. I never put spiked pits in hallways a or stick poisoned needles in chests anymore---but I *love* traps! Most of the more memorable combats over the past few years have involved traps interacting with the encounter space, making combat encounters much more complicated for...

D&D 5E (2014) Skills in 5E. Do we want them?

I would *love* that system. Old school yet elegant.

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

aaaaand with "4e is New Coke" I finally filled out my 4e Analogy Bingo card! Golly this bring back memories.

Same rules or different Rules (PC vs NPC)

4e's elegant, utilitarian monster design is my personal Rubicon for this edition. I'm willing to make *lot* of compromises in the interest of unity---but I'll not go back to AD&D or 3e monster presentation.

    D&D 5E (2014) One thing I want in my 5e!

oh this again. 1. iconic powers are generally there. Medusae turn you to stone. Rust monsters destroy your metal stuff. 2. Succubi make more sense as devils because devils are manipulative bastards while demons are destructive monsters. Yugoloths, fine whatever. 3. Eladrin. I will concede...

    No More Reptiles with Boobs!

The last time WotC tried to be "ballsy and cool as hell" they added devil-people and dragon-people and a bunch of people bitched that "D&D looks like Mos Eisley, amirite?". Considering those exact same people are the ones being courted for this new edition, I wouldn't expect such ballsy moves...

D&D 5E (2014) Your First Reaction to the 5E Announcement

Irritation that attention would be divided between my beloved 4e and the new shiny. Excitement at the possibilities of an open beta. Existential horror at the prospect of edition warriors coming out of retirement.

Pathfinder 1E is a big Pathfinder surge on the way?

Should 5e end up some Frankenstinian horror that has zero appeal for my group, we have a dozen 4e books and hundreds of adventures to keep us happily rolling up Dragonborn Warlords and spending healing surges for the foreseeable future. Give us a call when we can do the same with Pathfinder.

D&D 5E (2014) My Boring but Pragmatic Predictions for D&D Next

IIRC, oldest school (OD&D) doesn't even have that, instead task resolution is "player comes up with a clever idea, DM rolls ad hoc". Roots.

Monsters that have been degraded over time that need fixing

D&D 3.x How is this going to work? BECMI & 3.5 & 4e players all at once?

I'm *this* close to shutting down all speculation on my part, if only because I'm beginning to feel like this.

    In Defense Of: +X items

Admittedly, I spend more time that I would like scouring the Compendium to make sure that every adventure has the items necessary to keep my PCs within their expected stat range (they tend to lag behind on their wish lists). I *may* have had more fun back in 1e/2e rolling random treasure and...

Monsters that have been degraded over time that need fixing

Say what you want about 4e, but ending the era of the flaccid-nosed 3e troll was a boon to mankind.

    D&D 5E (2014) Iconics in 5E

Actually, I would say that you are describing pre-gens, not iconics---but this may me more of that quibbling over terms stuff I've heard so much about ;)
