    Let's collect the fantasy archetypes

"Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall."

    Kill raise dead... dead!

Honestly, we always took that to mean, "plot-crucial NPCs and any PC who hadn't finished level 30 yet"

    Seeing new People

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.

Zombies that need to stay dead. DEAD.

The Tolkien was strong in those days, and half-orcs were straight out of Isengard.

    Let's collect the fantasy archetypes

The past week with my nephew has been an eye-opener, as he is a teenager with almost zero exposure (or interest) in traditional fantasy but who LOVES playing D&D (in our case, a very modified version of a retro-clone). I asked him about some character types he could use in D&D and here's what I...

    Alignment Issues!

Oh gods I'd nearly forgotten. If there is one compelling reason to remove alignment from the game, it HAS to be the Chaotic Neutral PC.

    Modular Skill List

The dreamer in me says cut 'em all. The tinkerer in me says just add bonues to certain tasks as defined by your background and roll dice using one of three skills: Physical, Mental or Social. The realist in me expects the skills will end up looking a lot like 3.5

D&D 5E (2014) Can 5E bring the wonder and mystery back to Magic Items?

Thank you! I believe I was 12 when I figured out that a +1 sword (the kind Gygax littered his old modules with, by the way---so much for rare and wondrous) was just an extra 5% to hit.

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

I like the idea, and this is coming from a huge fan of both 4e and Warlords.

Vancian? Why can't we let it go?

I think that is a point of agreement. One Vancian system for those who want it, another system for those who don't. My feeling is that a non-vancian system as default could make the game more broadly accessible to people who wouldn't enjoy the game if Hermione can only say 'Leviosa' once a day.

Vancian? Why can't we let it go?

Oh yeah, the glory years when fighters went from being heroes to bodyguards.

Vancian? Why can't we let it go?

If I say "mana" or "spell points" then *everyone* gets it, from my gamer friends to their pre-teen children. It's universal and obvious. Spell memorization is ... well, let's just say it is neither. As an option for 'advanced' players, I we should have a Vancian class. But please consider a...

What in the world is left to be in core?

I'm referring to a stripped-down core, with multiple options *in the same book*. For example, warforged, warlords and character themes may not be in the 'core' game, but they would be in later chapters available to use or ignore as each group chooses. What I'm definitely against is shipping a...

Should multiclassing be restricted by race?

I love seeing Dwarf Wizards and Half-Orc Paladins. I wouldn't wish those characters shoved back in the closet.

How important is multi-classing, and why?

I don't see how it could be accomplished using a rigid class system, but man do I love Skyrim where my greataxe-wielding orc in heavy dragonplate has two signature spells that he's practiced for specific situations. Feats or themes could work to emulate that, as could a mechanism where one...

Why Isn't Planescape the Default Setting?

I played the Epic tier of Scales of War and we went to Sigil, had dogfights with Astral Skiffs, and engaged in all sorts of Planescape-like shenanigans. If it fits in the 4e default setting, I don;t see why it can't fit in the 5e one as well.

    Opt-in or Opt-out?

I agree with thedungeondelver. Score one more point for Unity ;)

D&D 4E Did WOTC lie to 4e players about 5e?

Which was another red flag. To help pad out that $1000 I would have expected to see a few hundred minis lying around. (edit: the dragons are nice, though. And as we all know, mini-scale model dragons can ONLY be used with 4e, so I eagerly await his upcoming ebay sale.)

Should multiclassing be restricted by race?

I sense a strange consensus in the Force.
