Saving Throws: What Should Become of Them?

Man, bring in something like Drama Points (my favorite iteration of that mechanic, from Unisystem) and I'd be thrilled.

Saving Throws: What Should Become of Them?

Assuming 5e is a game so remarkably simple that one could generate a new character (of *any* level) by the time a combat is over, then that may be possible. But I sincerely believe that will not be the case whatsoever. (and I have to admit that I chuckled when I saw the word 'henchmen' in...

Saving Throws: What Should Become of Them?

Perhaps I'm a jaded and entitled player, but I agree that *nothing* is less fun that having my only action for 10 minutes be "grab another beer". I'll even concede that 4e's 55% save chance may be a little *too* generous---I'd simply prefer a low chance of getting back into play than none at all.

D&D 5E (2014) Faith, Gods, and your Character in 5E

I enjoy running/playing in homebrew settings occasionally, and I find a 'default pantheon' to annoying if it is hardwired into powers (or their 5e equivalent). On a minor tangent, I am very much enjoying how these speculative discussions are forcing me to recall game elements stretching back...

Ryan dancey hints that DnD will become a board game....

I'm going to need much more evidence than that to even begin speculating. But it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Which should be the answer to just about everything in the new edition, AFAIAC.

    is Unity an impossiblity?

On one hand, it would be a nod to history and thus welcome by many. On the other, the semantic implication that one is somehow 'inferior' to the other is unavoidable. I prefer they try something else.

D&D 5E (2014) What Should The 5E Cleric Look Like?

At this point I'd almost rather they'd just get rid of the class---give healing spells to Wizards and give Divine Kick-Ass powers to Paladins/Holy Warriors. They never would, of course. But I can't think of a reason for the cleric class to even exist that doesn't begin with "because someone has...

Crafting - Will they ever get it right?

I couldn't care less about the holy bovines. Just make the game work.

    D&D 5E (2014) Hopes for the 5E Fighter

I think that may be the most reasonable solution for 'bridging the gap', so to speak. Have 5e allow for both fighting-men and wuxia heroes according to taste. I would have zero complains should such a system be forthcoming.

I think the days of bong-art fantasy are gone forever outside of retroclones and my uncle's van. I'd take a page from FRP video games (Dragon Age and Skyrim) for 5e---realistic without being mundane, with occasional points of fantasy awesome (dragonplate or dadric armor from Skyrim, frex).

Crafting - Will they ever get it right?

The more I think about what I want/don't want to see in 5e, the more I'm convinced just about everything should be an optional module.

D&D 5E (2014) Should 5e classes be Complicated or Simple?

I'll echo "Both" as well. Using 4e as an example, the Slayer and the Weaponmaster are both 'fighters', but one is simple and the other complex. Both can play in the same party with similar ability to contribute and have fun.

Why the love for the Edition Treadmill?

I was such a 3e fanboy that I cobbled together a group of seven people who hadn't role-played in years to try it out. We rocked for years until we broke under that system's accumulated weight. When 4e came out---addressing 3e's flaws---I became a system evangelist and edition warrior par...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hopes for the 5E Fighter

Honestly, I'd prefer a set of martial powers (silly as they may be to some) to yet another fiddly subsystem. But with Monte on board, I'm not keeping my hopes up.

    D&D 5E (2014) Hopes for the 5E Fighter

When I want a simple, "old-school" fighter, the Slayer is there with a dripping blade and feral grin. When I want a "Tank" with battlefield control and durability, the Knight raises his shield. When I want a mythic hero with abilities out of legend, the Weaponmaster grins from atop a pile of...
