D&D 5E (2014) How will the playtest of D&D next go at XP?

Not mine. Forbidden fruit is sweetest, after all. Gonna be a fun week. Try and enjoy it.

D&D 5E (2014) How will the playtest of D&D next go at XP?

This will happen to one degree or another, as I'm sure Wizards knows full well. Actually, I assume they're hoping playtesters will leak sporadic reports---the community frantically hitting F5 for the latest blurry scans and samizdat is far more engaging than a prosaic document dump, IMHO.

There are going to be a lot of people disappointed.

"Disappointment? Don't talk to me about disappointment."

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

Because that +1 Bohemian Ear-Spoon would look great above the fireplace in our stronghold. Just as soon as we schlep up those eight levels to the surface. ;)

The benefit of a videogame education

Hoo boy. If ENWorld posters handled a brand new edition of D&D the same way Blizzard posters greet a change in a single Death Knight talent tree, Morrus would throw the servers out a window and take up beekeeping.

In game-time, he even gets them in time for the next encounter ;)

There are going to be a lot of people disappointed.

I would like to take this opportunity to express how pleasantly surprised I've been with the tone on this board overall. Yes, there are some doomsayers, but for the most part this community has been positive, constructive, and open-minded. I've had many pleasant exchanges with former enemies...

    D&D 5E (2014) Please un-NERF Magic Items in 5e

Did that a lot in my last campaign (1st to 30). If a player found an item they liked, I would raise its level every few adventures and add the difference in value as a parcel. And yes, wish lists really helped me in that game.

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

Say what you will about 4e's magic economy, but one thing I don't miss about the good ol' days was lugging around bags of holding filled to bursting with magic items nobody wanted---or needed.

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

It was annoying to be honest. We'd all wished we'd been playing in a 1e module so at least he could grab one of the dozens of magic weapons lying around to replace our losses.

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

Not quite correct. It simply renders your item down to its value in residuum, leaving you in your underwear and/or armed with a stick until you can a) get back to town and get new equipment or b) wait around for a ritual-casting PC to make something for you of his level or lower.

    Retraining?

I didn't even *realize* there were retraining rules until I saw them in the character builder. I usually just let layers change whatever they want between sessions (or during a session if it doesn't slow down play).

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

Last month in a rust monster destroyed our 8th-level fighter's +2 greataxe (an uncommon level 10 item). While it was nice to get the value of the item back, there was no way he could *replace* a weapon that powerful on his own. He'd either have to have our wizard enchant a lesser 7th-level...

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

Good point. Cutting a rust monster open and *not* finding residuum (essentially magical rust) would strain my disbelief to the breaking point. Verisimili-dude.

Your D&D edition is not a football team

The problems I see stem not from fans wanting their edition to "win", but from wanting other editions to "lose".

    Level of Play

My last 4e game went from 1st to 30th, my current game started at 1st, is currently at 10th and we intend to go to 30th as well.

D&D 4E My Least Favourite Thing About 4e is Forced Balance

Ahhhh. Thanks! Just read it. Looks like I have a new house rule. ;)

D&D 4E My Least Favourite Thing About 4e is Forced Balance

Fire Archon (4e's fire elemental) in the Monster Vault has resist 20 fire. Am I missing something?

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition should most resemble?

Give me a B/E retroclone with some of the more archaic rules modernized and streamlined and I will be thrilled.

Of all the complaints about 3.x systems... do you people actually allow this stuff ?

ಠ_ಠ I had the same exact group of players in both versions of the game, yet with only one game system did I have to deal with the problems enumerated above. So either five people miraculously stopped being 'malcontents and 'incompetents' , or the new system effectively addressed the issues we...
