    Forgotten Realms Campaign

I am currently DMing 2 campaigns in the FR, one in Cormyr (Pre-Dragon, the PCs may very well stop that dragon in the future) and one in a heavily modified Unther/Mulhorand. For Cormyr there are numerous sources, especially PDFs. I recommend Volo's Guide to Cormyr and the Cormyr sourcebook. I...

Are D&D rulebooks stuck in the 70's?

I can imagine that. I am often astonished by the amount of people who seem to be unable to understand (or even believe) that there are people who, despite knowing that their PCs will not die without a clear warning and a way out, do not exploit this by making them act in a completely foolhardy...

    Sympathy for the Players

I don't know about the players in question, but maybe they don't want to play the advanced tactics side of D&D. Not everyone likes such games. For example, in my current Shadowrun campaign, emphasis lies on the characters' weaknesses and the often amusing trouble they get into, not on cunning...

Sorceror in current edition worse than wizard?

From my experience, spontaneous casting beats a wide selection of spells to prepare any day, at least in my campaigns. My sorceress-14 has failed a dispel check more than once and had to cast another dispel or greater dispel or two to succeed. Same goes when our party needed knock - a single...

    Developer's Roundtable: Mystic Theurge

I have to agree with Monte: Balancing a class by having it be substantially weaker than other classes during the lower levels while letting it be more powerful tha the rest of the classes at higher levels is not a fun way to play a game. Or, in other words: If in the end a class is...

Why would a DM want a copy of the players character sheet?

Well, for bad tactics, there is a fix or two. First, and easiest solutions: Don't care about it. Your monsters get killed to easily, so what? As long as everyone has fun, all is right. If push comes to shove, just tack on a few hitpoints or levels when preparing, or even when fighting, so that...

Are D&D rulebooks stuck in the 70's?

You can play a heroic character without having written "LG" or "CG" on your sheet. Just imagine a campaign where you have no alignment for characters: Your PCs can regularly put their lives on the line to save innocents, give to the needy, defend the weak, battle tyrants, criminals and fiends...

Are D&D rulebooks stuck in the 70's?

I do not have to "allow" players to switch the alignment of their characters, it can just happen, and it has consequences. But since most often any important action in my games has consequences, for good or ill, I am not too worried about an alignment change or two too much (not that it has ever...

Are D&D rulebooks stuck in the 70's?

I'd rather have a DM tell me "do that and your PC will change alignment" than "You can't do that because of your alignment". Stories are full of how people change, for better or worse, and it is often a main theme of literature. As a tangent, I always saw Chaotic Neutral not as an excuse to run...

    S&SS scoop: Shelzari Eroticist

Hmm... I have a bard PC who fits the definition of the class perfectly. It loks like a bit too good, however. The only thing the bard gives up are the will save and bardic knowledge advancement. In exchange the eroticist gains mutliple new powers. The dance of steel and the dance of wind look...

    Egyptian Adventures!

I have been running a weekly game set in a heavily modified Mulhorand/Unther in the also heavily modified FR, with the PCs working for a temple in the occupied Unthalass. With Mulhorand warring against the free Unther, rebels making trouble in the occupied territories, the Red Wizards meddling...

Why would a DM want a copy of the players character sheet?

I tailor all my adventures to the PCs' background, strength and weaknesses. Having all the information at hand helps building suitable opponents. Also, listen, spot, and other checks can be rolled without giving something away (Although in my current groups the players generally do not metagame...

    Player Character Accounting

I always make a character file in word with background, motivations, history (expanded into the campaign journal), important NPCs, scanned and colored sketches and stats (stats, skills, feats, spells, gear etc.). I usually add a customized character sheet to pencil the stats etc. in.

Do the Red Wizards hate and fear your PCs?

In one of my campaigns one PC is a member of the clergy in Mulhorand, and the group has killed several Red Wizards and Thayan Knights. (Cleric-Fighter, Fighter, Sorcerer, Barbarian, all level 14). We got heavily modified prestige classes and complicated backgrounds, but currently they are...

Even if you hate Drizzt, Still read this post.

Despite being a posterboy for munchkins, Drizzt actually is a rather weak character for his level if you crunch the numbers. If you consider the whole group of Drizzt, it is basically a TPK waiting to happen in a standard D&D game. No spellcaster, no healer.

    New respect for crossbows

You could not be more wrong. In Switzerland there is no such thing as an "automatic life sentence", and especially not without parole. And speedy trial? I work at court, there is no such thing for capital crimes either. (And just breaking the law with a gun is not a capital crime in itself.)

    New respect for crossbows

In Switzerland, swords are not covered by the weapon laws, since they are too long to be concealed. But this is in a country where sixteen year olds get a military-issue assault rifle to keep at home over summer ("Just don't switch the plate covering the burst-fire and autofire modes like this...

Even if you hate Drizzt, Still read this post.

No, you did not waste your time. You are absolutely free to make a house rule that mithril weapons reduce the penalties for two-weapon fighting. You could even drop the penalties for two-weapon fighting altogether, if you wish.

How do you guys do Hps? And why?

We generally roll, but bad results, especially for melee PCs, are rerolled until the hitpoints "fit". We play together, not against each other, and if sticking to the "roll once and keep it" rules hampers our fun, then the rule gets changed.

Electronic Product Use- Real version :)

I used my desktop for years to prepare all my notes for adventures. I used to lug around pounds of paper composed of campaign notes (in case something from the past of the PCs comes up), self-made sourcebooks and NPC-files (Both often not up to date) and several printed sourcebooks. Since a...
