What version of D&D is your favorite to play?

I'm trying to get a handle on the composition of this site. I realize most of you guys like things about all 3 major systems and that you might change from one to the other. But try to think "right now" whats your favorite advanced system. I'm breaking it down into 3 major systems (based on...

What is wrong with race class limits?

Gentlegamer has this right. Role Play in the since of D&D (and most RPGs) relates to playing the role of the character however you choose. This could be someone moving his piece like a chess piece...yes (as long as he understands, he "is" that guy. So when the DM controlling an NPC talks to...

[EDITION WARZ] Selling Out D&D's Soul?

As others have stated, 3E D&D is no longer the same game as 1E. It shares similarities in names of monsters and attributes, weapons etc. but its basically a game about building PCs and making them unique. 1E is about adventure first and foremost. PC building is not really that big an issue...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

Shaman, I do hope you don't leave. I've been lurking here a long time, and I think in general ENworld has become very friendly toward 1E (compared to where it was). I'm sure Hussar didn't mean anything personal by his comment. Hussar, your question of what a "railroad" module is depends on...

So what is your favorite module, ever?

Very difficult to just single out one. Hmmm, a second vote for White Plume. I just ran White Plume about a month ago...and as the other poster said, its a blast each time. Its got a great mix of monster types, traps, and puzzling things, and magic. And also the wacky chaotic theme (magic...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

Good to know. I'll give it a shot. One things thats frustrating is I can't seem to find my stack of 3E modules, just my core books. Others here have been asking for examples of modules I find too controlling or guided (but it looks as if I gave them all away to another player when I stopped...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

Q" See, I may disagree that the open-endedness is a good thing. I mean, what did I *pay* for, if I've gotta figure out everything for myself? Heck, if all I needed was rooms and monsters, didn't 1e give me a method to randomly generate that? Why would I need to buy a module at all? What am I...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

Gizmo, I agree with everything you just said. And check out your post number 777! :) Q: "I don't find a lot of difference in 1E and 3E. I think the prize for "railroadiest" modules would go to 2E, I recall some obscure Forgotten Realms modules that were extremely (and intentionally, I think)...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

I do not dictate the course of action for my players, thats up to them at all times (running a module or not). My definition relates more to my players. When they feel as if they are tied up in some thick plot (usually with a good bit of romance novel story line included) that drags them...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

OK, I see the problem, I'm using a different definition of what railroading is then some of you. I don't limit it to only when a group is forced into one outcome no matter what. I consider it when a module is written in such a way that the DM will naturally want the players to follow a...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

Hound, you have no idea how much I like to be called sonny these days. ;) I agree with the above poster. 2E and late 1E had major railroading going on in their modules. My favorite modules with a paragraph intro to get you to the dungeon, a nice blue map withhalls and rooms numbered and...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

Q: "The players don't get into a situation where the slavers capture them...they are told purely as a matter of record that what has happened has happened, regardless of any input they might have." Sure, thats the starting point of the module. What the players do at that point is up to them...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

Hussar, Every dungeon has one path basically, (with one final big treasure at the end that must be found if you want to advance); dungeons, after all, are nothing more then a set of rooms and halls leading to a final showdown, and yes, many side paths are dangerous and trapped and are best...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

Melan, just fall back on 1d6 per side, high role goes first, ties are simo (make WSF and charging rules optional) and your as BTB as anyone). MerricB: "Err... this is a feature that has been around since G1, actually." Give me a break. Those can't be compared to 2E and 3E railroading modules...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

No other company compares in size to WOTC/HASBRO. If you want to drop down to B&N or your local gaming store and buy a module thats in the style of 1E, you can't. Sour grapes on my part....yes. :] At least PPP, C&C, GG, and some smaller publishers are releasing 1E compatable material...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

Q: "It's a problem that Wizards wants people to play the game? They are a business, I'd hope they want everyone to play their game." Its a problem because its a rules set that doesn't please everyone. Infact, as others have mentioned in this thread, not everyone is cut out for this game...

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

Brocilli Rage do you like the new PPP and GG and ER "old school" covers by chance?

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

MerricB, "The primary focus of 3e (like every edition of D&D) is on combat. It isn't on avoiding combat. Dungeons are still a primary part of adventures, although we've moved away from large megadungeons to a series of smaller dungeons with more defined goals." If you reread my post you'll see...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

A computer programer! Well, I can see why 3E would be a game you'd really like. :D As to 1E initiative: Merric, what you summarized above is only 1 interpretation on how 1E initiative works, and IMHO is not the best interpretation. Another interpretation of BTB intiative: (Note...

How dungeons have changed in Dungeons and Dragons

1E initiative rules are very simple. Role a D6 high role goes first (per side). Ties are simo, or use weapons speed adjustment. There's nothing confusing about them...nor is there anything as quick. As for 3E, I was following the rules as written.
