What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

Q: "Uh... I don't think so. I didn't post that to praise it as a positive quality. It made the D&D stuff look amateurish and silly, IMO" Your opinion  (which seems to be in the minority) is noted.

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

Raven: "Except they aren't." Whatever dude. Just please don't cry. ;)

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

Charelsatan: "So now we're approximating? But either way, that still exists in 3E. " Wait, I think your getting me confused with P&P who had specific characters from books he thought were used as the primary templates for classes. I have always been approximating. My point is, however, even...

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

JD: "Whoa--just scanning through the thread and this eye-popping claim jumped out and bit me by the sack. Are you kidding? You're saying that 1e had a more general public target market than 3e? On what are you basing this extraordinary claim?" What are you talking about? I never mentioned 3E...

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

I'm not talking that literally, rather "closest to". Merlin is the only one that comes to mind as a wizard (and the one portrayed in Excalibur would be the classic sort), Jack and the Bean Stalk corresponds with a thief (sneaks in sneaks out with the goods), Prince X take your pick for a...

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

Charelsatan: "Uh, when you're denying that the likes of T.H. White and le Guin aren't popular, I think your argument starts falling apart. I'll be honest: I haven't heard of Book of Three. But as pointed out, just because I haven't heard of it doesn't mean it wasn't popular. T.H. White and...

Did you use UA in your 1E games?

Foster: "making the paladin into a subclass of the cavalier". UGGG!!! I forgot about that. Yeah that would have to go on top of the pile of stuff I hated about UA.

    Do you run multiple PCs?

Iv'e recently started playing 2-4 PCs at the same time. So far its kinda cool. All of my PCs though have histories, and were played solo...it probably wouldn't work as well if I started them out from scratch that way. Anyone else try this? I know this was apparently the norm back in "the...

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

J-dawg, first off, you can come up with a million and one archetypes. I was referring to the popular "types" or roles found in AD&D 1E (in this case the basic classes) and other popular literature (I was breaking it into 5, the child, the protector/provider, the teacher, and the healer. These...

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

M: "I've got the opposite experience. Kids have been excited over a lot of the 3e pictures, and went "meh" over a lot of the 1e pictures. There's no accounting for taste, I guess ... " Go figure. :D J Dawg: "What was so magical about 1e/OD&D artwork? It made me feel that maybe there was a...

Do you allow magic to be purchased in your 1E AD&D games?

Not being able to predict if it will be available is an important point, and keeping it minor (I might allow +1 magic dagger for bukoo bucks. I thought about rangers seconding as "healers" with herbs (like Strider) (maybe healing at 2 pts a day). But whats the point. :\

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

Q: "It certainly does. Of the particular images from early gaming I find most compelling, most would be considered middle of the road today, but that doesn't make them any less dear to me." I don't buy this completely. Sure nastalgia is part of it. But to a greater extent is the actual feel...

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

So, assuming these books were very popular with the target audiance of 1E, and assuming there were wizards running around in armor all over the place with swords...that still doesn't mean Gygax had any obligation to go with that universe. He went with the Tolkein world setting (I know he denies...

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

Yeah, like I said, these books don't define the average persons impression of generic fantasy setting. But yeah, Black Cauldron was very popular and would have an impact. But if you asked someone who didn't play any FRPGs (yeah a non-geek) what a wizard looks like (an older guy in robes)...

Do you allow magic to be purchased in your 1E AD&D games?

I allow players to buy potions only (and usually just the weakest) when available. I pretty much limit it to heal unless the PCs have big bucks to blow and are in a big city. I make potions expensive (heal around 3-500 GPs) and allow only a few for sale.

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

AD&D 1Es primary demographic was a more general public and thus had to have a wide appeal. The books you mentioned weren't read by anyone I knew back then. Maybe in your neck of the woods. And wouldn't fit into the stereotypical fairy tale world? Are you kidding? The Once and Future King is...

    AD&D1 Treasure Types

I also need to add, I didn't use the treasure tables unless it was a lair, or equiv. (small parties would be assigned something lower but I usually still role to keep the element of nuetrality and chance to the game. And I also would temper what I rolled for treasure depending on the tempo of...

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

RFisher: "the hero needs to be broken up into multiple heroes, each of which is a facet of the one." Isn't the same true in many novels, movies, television shows etc.? I agree though, that the main purpose was to create the need for group partisipation. Also, this would explain what might...

Did you use UA in your 1E games?

Please list your experiance with using the book, and if you think it was a net positive or negative on the game. When the book first came out we did. But after a year, we dropped it (only mining it for magical items and spells). I thought it had a negative impact on the game.
