What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

Zogmo: "It's like punk music from the 70's. It was unpolished, energetic and it was speaking to a very small specialized crowd of people who were not fitting in with the "norm" of society." Exactly, and great observation. The art from the early days had true love of the game shining through...

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

Q: "As someone in his mid 30's, this depresses me: I want my sense of wonder back. " Nah, don't buy this guys story. :D He's just gunning for more public grant money. PawsPlay wrote: "In my opinion, the best art, of the new and the old, has a dreamlike quality. Ideally, the underlying...

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

Partical Man:"I also must admit that I prefer the "auld medieval" look to modern looks, but admit that is my own personal taste." Yeah the new art seems to feature made up armor in an attempt to make it more "interesting". 1E art seems to match the look of the armor you see in Medieval...

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

The use of black and white art does NOT always mean a cheaper product. Often its chosen intentionally, as it gives a different feel then color. I think it allows the viewer to "color" the picture with his imagination, thus giving some ownership to it. For instance, the Players Handbook 1E...

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

Q: "I cringe at today's D&D art as well as CGI clogging up movies. In effect, these devices are disallowing the viewer any opportunity to use his or her own imagination. Why? Because absolutely every detail is presented to us, thus robbing us the use of our "imagination muscles", if such a thing...

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

Tarek wrote: "Ultimately, I think it's because the drawings and artwork weren't drawn, for the most part, by artists who went to commercial or fine arts schools." I've read several professional artists who've stated they wouldn't have gone the commercial art school route if they could do it...

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

I'm talkng about the stuff put out pre-UA and pre-Dragonlance. There was a spirit in the artwork (esp. in the 3 core books and the old modules) that just hasn't been matched by the technically proficient artists of the 2E period on up to today. I know some of this has to do with the posing...

Who still plays older versions of D&D?

Didn't mean to suggest you had to choose. I was trying to explain why the edition wars died down. There were 2 camps at each others throats for a long time. I think the problem was created by WOTC honestly, as they "sold" 3E as everything to everybody.

Who still plays older versions of D&D?

Yeah, that and I think people have just settled down. And I think both camps have come to the understanding that their game isn't "better" just different, and that each hits a different type of person.

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

Raven: "Personally, I think the "classes are archetypes" argument used in relation of 1e and 2e AD&D is very much overblown. The main problem with the argument (as I see it) is that the classes as written don't seem to fit any literary archetypes at all." The 5 basic archetypes are broad, not...

Who still plays older versions of D&D?

    D. "I'd love to play a 1E or 2E game if there was one available." What about OSRIC? Its free, and you could just e-mail the book to your 3E players to look at (for Character generation etc.). And I understand Shrooms is a great new module (written by the OSRIC original author..which is cool).

Can your players know too much?

Aaron wrote: "Everyone I game with DMs his own game sometimes, and has since 1E, so we all know the rules. It doesn't diminish our enjoyment of the game at all. I can't imagine how not knowing the rules would increase our fun. I don't recall the game becoming any less fun once I read the DMG."...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

Storm Raven, I guess your experiance with 3E is just different then mine. If by now you haven't discovered any problems in game play with 3E, its probably a great match for you. Perhaps the differences in opinions between the 1E camp and the 3E camp really always boiled down to personality...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

Aaron, the DM is God mindset isn't meant to be be license to completely drop the rules and be a jerk to the players (who after all showed up to play a certain game). Its about how this is the DMs world, and he is the final say on anything that happens in it. If he wants to suddenly say your...

Maggen: "Since you used bold type and larger font size, and judging from the phrasing of your post, this is something that makes you really upset. So I will bow out of this discussion, because I don't want to write more posts that make you even more upset." I hope you do not. I was enjoying...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

Crimthan, that was an inspired post...you truely are "Great". ;) Seriously, there is a huge difference in the "culture" of players between 1E/OD&D and 3E. Some of that diff. relates to who WOTC marketed 3E to (Magic players, used to self determination and stacking, and then the 2E players...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

Aaron: "You see, this is the answer I always read from people advocating more DM power. The DM has to be really great, and if not then it just sucks to be you, find another game or start your own. What about all those people who want to be a DM but aren't that great at it yet? They just get...
