Do you prefer D20 or To Hit and Save Tables

Huh? No, I was saying Gygax must have seen how easy it would be to not use tables (ie. A first level fighter roles a d20 and adds 1, a second level fighter roles a d20 and adds 2, a third level fighters roles a d20 and adds 3 etc.) but he put this in a table (more or less) anyways....why? I...

Do you prefer D20 or To Hit and Save Tables

Num: "I wasn't being nasty. I was just surprised that you everything in 1E good design. But I guess you knew that since you ninja-edited it out and replaced with touchy. I was just sharing my opinion like you so eloquently put." OK maybe I over-reacted...its been known to happen :D Anyhow...

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

This is undoubtedly a very tough market to make a living in, esp. when you realize how much of the market is totally dominated by WOTC. Most people who'd likely see your "hot off the press" game system are already familiar with D20, so do you put your eggs in the ("buy us, were familiar D20...

Do you prefer D20 or To Hit and Save Tables

Thats what I was thinking as well, yet the trend was to simplify (and the tables from 1E are much more involved then OD&D) and as others have noted THACO was already out there, so why complicate it? Hell, before we heard of THACO we did something similar just to avoid having to lug around the...

Do you prefer D20 or To Hit and Save Tables

Numion, please chill out, this is not a debate, let people freely share their opinions (as they are) no reason to get so touchy. Anyhow, I'm sure Pirate Cat would appreciate civilty in this thread. ;) Well, as far as THACO goes, I didn't see it used until the later part of the 80s (so...

Do you prefer D20 or To Hit and Save Tables

I prefer games taht use tables (like 1E). I think it both leaves the players in the dark and thus captures a since of mystery. It also seems to put the power with the GM (who determines who hits or misses by consulting the chart) and reduces the work for the players (who in D20 have the task...

    Gnomes picture

gnomes look like smaller dwarves (with beards), they are not boulbus nosed, pointy hatted, giant eared, or shoes that stick up with bells. There is an old 1E module (can't recall which) that has an outside trail (I think) where you meet gnomes. They are illustrated in it if I remember...

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

As for marketers, this is simple: what will sell (if they want D20 than thats what you provide). As SteveC mentions, the public will tolerate something other then D20 when they percieve a markedly different reason. The general differences between say D20 and using TABLES (1E, OD&D) probably...

    "Mo' Dungeon = Mo' fun?"

I prefer larger dungeons, but mixed with occasional short stuff. And the short stuff usually being of teh players choice (rather then being written into the plot). The side track in town, or the lair you occasionally find when out exploring.

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

OK, my take on D20 is this: its an easy system to use, and fast. Thats the advantage. The disasvantage is that its an easy system to use and its fast. I found it took some of the mystery out of the game (loosing the tables), and made the DM seem less important somehow. But I realize not...

How much focus should be placed on gods and dieties

Thanks Mark, I missed that completely. BTW, I think pantheons and gods work much better when they are the creation of the DM for his world. The problem with the D&D was that the players gobbled it up. There was no mystery left for the DM to weave. Its best when this stuff is trickled out to...

Could this be the future format of 4th Edition D&D?

I'd expect major simplification (having gone to the extreme with 3E and 3.5) perhaps a move toward doing away with all archetypes (building exactly what you want). I also don't think we'll see a turn toward Heroscape. That horse has come and gone, its old news. I'd expect the franchise to...

How much focus should be placed on gods and dieties

Mark wrote: "There was a thread about this a few weeks ago, but I can't be bothered to go looking for it, lol. Some folks went for the "Generic the Cleric" approach, but plenty of others incorporated religions, pantheons and deities from the outset (myself included)." Mark, did you start...

How much focus should be placed on gods and dieties

When all we had were the original 3 core books in the late 70s (PH, DMG and MM) our group didn't put much attention on the clerics' and players particular gods (it was enough to know the alignment). The DM sometimes offered this info to the player, but usually not. They didn't have much info...

Has anyone recieved their Monsters of Myth yet?

Whats it like? I understand the images weren't as good in the first print but are nice and crisp now. Any chance you could write a review for it (I noticed you have 2 reviews under your avitar)? :heh: PS how long did you have to wait after ordering for Lulu to get it to your door (I assume...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

dcas: "Well, UA was rushed as has been pointed out above. But even for that it is still a very good game supplement. I like it much better than Deities & Demigods, Fiend Folio, and Monster Manual II." Well, its hard to argue with that dcas (though I think both monster manuals were more useful...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

I think you should Foster. For some reason I think you could pull it off.

Hey Foster, can you remember the jist of it? Did they have any unique spells or abilities?

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

dcas: "I understand the "alpha male" concept as it relates to animal behavior, but I was just curious as to why it was being applied to barbarians. Sure, Conan was an "alpha male" -- but he was also a king." The barbarian personality is one which is always trying to be the top dog, falling in...
