What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

This is straight out of marketing actually. The terminology was stolen by researchers studying animal behavior (primarily wolves). I think Foster suggested the same thing. IMO, this would likely be the only way to make this class work (at least with the severe magic restrictions). As you...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Foster: "he doesn't use it because he hates it, it's unnatural, and unmanly, and ultimately destroys all those who rely on it too heavily." How is a +2 ring or sword unmanly. If thats true, why isn't a regular sword unmanly, you could use a dagger or even bare hands. Remember, magic is very...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

TFoster: "I guess I can see how some players might get upset by something like that, but for all of us we accepted it as part of the game and a memorable moment. YMMV, I guess..". Again, it makes the barbarian seem less like some bad a$$ fighter, and more like some guy on a quest to destroy...

What if D&D was written around problem-solving

But why? Free will is the point of the game. Its an FRPG, a reality simulator...its cowboys and indians, but with dice and a DM to describe the world your in. Its fun because you can go and do whatever you like. Take away that choice, and its just another lame game. Players work together and...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Foster: "Don't forget that if a barbarian destroys a magic item he gets XP as if he'd kept it -- just be sure not to let him anywhere near that Staff of the Magi! " So, whats the rational here. :\ Are there gods rewarding them for destroying magic? Man, I totally forgot about this rule, this...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Well, I can understand this logic. The only problem to me is that I don't think most players think of a +1 sword as very magical (they don't see what goes into making it, nor that much difference in hitting or inflicting damage), but rather just a good sword that won't break and will hit things...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Gentle Gamer: "The barbarian has an innate detect magic ability . . . the short hairs on his neck go prickly and and he realizes the sword is enchanted. "Witch-crafted blade, begone!" OK where is this coming from? What mythology from history creates this impression.

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Foster, there is a huge difference between a barbarian not being allowed to use ANY magic or associate with magic users until high level and a cleric using a non-edged weapon (taking an oath not to draw blood), or an MU not being trained to use swords (which is perfectly logical and most DMs do...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

dcas, if the magic item in question glows suddenly or gives off sparks sure, the barbarian might back away. However, if it doesn't do anything "scary" why would he put it down. Thats illogical to the EXTREME! Gruff discovers the pretty sword he found is a sword of sharpness and he throws it...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

IMHO they sucked. It wasn't just their power, it was their imported personalities. I wouldn't expect Conan to toss a perfectly good magical sword because it glowed ("mmm...good...light" is what I'd expect) and the disassociation with MUs was stupid as well ("don't cast sleep, let the group get...

What if D&D was written around problem-solving

Right on. In the end for some players (depending on the PC their running) its going to be "did I survive" not did the group survive. Sometimes the wrong decision for the group is the right one for the individual (like you running with the mega magical artifact while everyone else deals with...

What makes a Monty Haul Game?

Let them fill their backpacks with gold, they cross an underground lake, the boat flips "ahhhh!" (from some attack) and likely some will drown. Treasure and greed are the ultimate traps. ;) The key to this question is making it unpredictable, keep treasure and magic rare (thus...

What if D&D was written around problem-solving

D&D is an FRPG where the players assume the role of the characters to the same level as if they were real (in their imaginations at least). In that way, the game is about problem solving (just like real life). In order to advance in levels (or just escape to fight another day) the characters...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Hey, you should have seen my group. CE was a breeze for these psychos. Enslaving villages, sending undead zombies raiding homes, one guy even had a half orc dine on an elf sandwhich (thats right an elf between 2 slices of bread). They would have had no problem with an anti-paladin class. ;)

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

dcas: "This thread is about the first edition AD&D Unearthed Arcana, so the anti-paladins to which I was referring are 1e anti-paladins (described in Dragon magazine). They are chaotic evil and are totally unplayable. Under the 1e rules, paladins who "fall" simply become fighters." I think...

Thanks dcas, I knew that didn't sound right. Fixed. ;) BTW your probably right about the anti-paladin, but it might have been interesting none the less.

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Without diving into an edition war (pre-UA vs Post-UA) I'd like to have seen PC classes for: beserker taken from the original MM and worked up (ditch the scaredy-cat of magic uber-barbarian), a Witch/Warlock (worked up from the Dragon Mag), an Anti-Paladin, Gygax's hunter (this class was...

    Neutral Paladin

In pre-UA 1E Paladins must be LG. If they fail to act LG at all times they become fighters (and may or may not ever regain their former class; I'd strongly suggest not involving UA in this). To switch to an anti-paladin, I think you'd have to turn in an extreme way to CE, and likely need to be...

Deck of Many Things: Your experiences and advice?

"The Deck of Many Things" its what the game was meant to be all about (the ordinary meet the extraordinary). But keep in mind, this could stop the show (as others have pointed out). PS This item is very "old school" in the random sort of way, it works great for 1E/OD&D with its endless...
