We Were All New D&D Players Once

Pre gens are awful but acceptable for one's first session. As far as character builds...just ask them if they want to play a wizard, fighter, thief or a priest type that fights vampires...those are easy to grasp concepts and they're in english. They will pick one, roll dice, and the...

Need advice for a lethal prison style dungeon module

It really gives the fighters a chance to shine since the spellcasters have nothing. I wouldn't even allow cantrips in 5e under that scenario. And then lets see if the players can think to take the key to carve out a brick to smash another guy's skull in, to break into an office where all they...

Need advice for a lethal prison style dungeon module

I think it was A1 or A2 of the slaver series that had it set up as prisoners in a cell, all naked, no tools, no spell books, no nothing. Then they had to fight with their fists until they could find a tool (like a jailor's key in your case) to pry out a brick. From there you would have an...

Format of Books, Ease of use?

One thing I wish is the players handbook listed the spells like the 1e version did: by class, then level, then A-Z. It's next to impossible to scan the spells when choosing

D&D 5E (2014) Game Theory. CR and 5E Encounter System.

May I ask how you tweaked it?

Oh cleric what are thou? When most classes can heal...

As a 1e child, I would say the answer to all of those questions is "not really". 5e has sort of stripped theme and character from all the classes, and has made it all very democratic and fair, but it is all sort of meaningless now. Gone is all the mood and character of the different classes...

D&D 5E (2014) What have you found to be the hardest thing for new players to understand about 5e systems?

10 year olds are a lot smarter than people think. At 10 you are probably at your peak of learning powers and have the ability to accept and absorb anything. That's why kids can learn languages in a snap, and your grandmother can't work the remote.

D&D 5E (2014) What have you found to be the hardest thing for new players to understand about 5e systems?

I am an old player who came back to the game after 30 years, and after two years being exposed to 5e, I am still confused about what you guys call action economy and just tend to ignore it. The action, extra action, bonus action, saving an action, weapon action, using an action to dash...it...

Looking for scenarios/campaign with little combat (to play with kids) any system

I am not sure about the player count, but google "Jacob's Well D&D" . It's a mystery "Alien" type adventure. I think just one combat in the entire thing. I found it fun and you can convert it to 5e easily enough. It was in Dragon Magazine.

    Favorite one-shots?

I doubt you have ever heard of this, but I would get the PDF of Judges Guild Book Of Treasure Maps v1, and run "The Lone Tower" by Jennell Jaquays. It has some material that I would label mature (I would not run it for 10 year olds). It's easily convertable as it is filled with giant rats...

    Can Clerics Cure Cancer?

I think, as per Expedition To The Barrier Peaks, the short answer is "no".

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd + AL modules?

I ran the AL modules but not the main book. It was a couple of years back but the highlight for me was the episode at this party in a house and people had switched identities...something like that. Jenny Greenteeth was a favorite among the players. The hook I forget, everyone was walking in...

Have you ever intentionally ignored a character aspect?

What I am playing is a 5e version of 2e Al Qadim. In an effort to jury rig the Corsair, I took a regular fighter with the mariner fighting skill which I think was from UA sea advantures I found online (get 2 attacks per turn, must use a cutlass, cannot wear any armor heavier than leather, no...

Have you ever intentionally ignored a character aspect?

I am playing 5e, a fighter, and I have just reached third level. At second level I got a second win and some sort of extra action power surge thing, now at third level I get to choose a martial archetype that gives me more extra actions and whatnot. The problem is I don't want the extra...

    Why I dislike Milestone XP

D&D should go back to XP for GP. I know it doesn't make sense from a logic standpoint but it promotes good gameplay because there is a constant incentive to adventure, and also a very real incentive to be wise in choosing your fights. Just awarding xp for fighting sort of demands a party...

Alternate Method of Calculating Hit Points

Balance is overrated. I want my wizards having different worries than my fighters, and there should be a price/reward for choosing a certain class. Rangers may have got an extra HD but they didn't get built in Prot From Evil or lay on hands. Wizards had crummy HP but they could cast...

Alternate Method of Calculating Hit Points

As I remember OD&D the system they had was every class had a cap at somewhere around 10th level for rolling dice, and then after that you only get 1,2 or 3 HP per level depending on your class or maybe even less for wizards. So Wizards while getting more and more powerful were more and more...

    AD&D 1E Mearls on AD&D 1E

I find the roll under far simpler. It is a one step calculation, just roll under your dex. The system that replaced it requires you to find the plusses assiigned to your dex, see if you are proficient, add it all together and then roll. Most of the time it is all added up on your sheet...
