    Surprise Attacks

I usually follow how spells work when I think about how to resolve this stuff. By that I mean that since swift & immediate spells don't provoke, if someone wanted to end conversation and start a fight, a swift spell would get off right away and then everyone goes into normal initiative...

    Luck Feats and Luck Domain

The feat Third Time's The Charm does allow a cleric to re-use the luck domain ability. That's pretty close, although admittedly it's not burning Turn Undead uses to power it.

In Your Experience: How Good are GM's?

Hmm. I suspect you don't really want to have the answer. I say this because you have already heard dissenting opinions from people in this thread, and rather than try to embrace them and understand them, it seems you have begun posting defensively. That's not a good place to learn from. And...

How soon do you see warning signs of a TPK?

My players were very prone to ignoring hints, going so far as to ignore a vision from a god. And that bring me to answer the OP's question, as posed months ago. How soon do I see a TPK? Really far in advance. It turns out, I'm pretty good at doing balanced encounters in D&D 3.5 (I know, it's...

In Your Experience: How Good are GM's?

It sounds like you want to DM. I don't think being a player is your strength.

    Stupidest things PCs/DMs have done

One of the players in the game with the undead corpse-hydra was looking to get into more D&D games. I play in a game with "Mean DM" from this forum and a few others, and I told him about the game. Very tactical, focus on minis & strategic combat. He was enthusiastic. First night playing, we...

    Stupidest things PCs/DMs have done

We were playing the Goodman Games module, Cage of Delirium. In a hole underneath the haunted asylum, there is an undead corpse-hydra. Normally, the module gives this monster 12 heads that each attack and spit fire. Knowing how to play hydras properly, I knew that I would kill all the PCs with...

Are there any ways to maximize HP after level 1?

I would note that when my clerics have the luck domain, I use the luck re-roll on my hit point roll, if needed. It doesn't maximize anything, but it does help to keep the number from being terrible. :)

    When PCs fail.

Yeah, I let them fail, and I've even had the gang here at En World help me work through it. In my campaign, the party failed multiple quests, and I just let the world get wrecked. I also let them explore whatever solutions to the mess they wanted. In the end, they decided to simply flee the...

Balancing encounters for a 6 player party - help!

I just searched for it and it's not appearing in any of the main books from WotC. Maybe it's a splat book from a third party. In any case, it sounds very much not playtested at all, because... ...of this. I'm not sure that syringes are a tool I'd necessarily even have in the period of time I...

Balancing encounters for a 6 player party - help!

Yep. 5th level wizards, 6th level sorcerers -- at that point, they gain 3rd level spells, and that's a deal-breaker for lower-level PCs. If you have a 5th level wizard NPC and he's got his first Fireball spell, he's going to bring all the PCs down by an average of 17 hit points in the first...

Balancing encounters for a 6 player party - help!

I mostly agree with billd91. The only exception I would add is that I think you *may* throw slightly higher CR enemies at a big party. However, I would qualify that by saying only slightly higher CR than normal, and I'd expect the DM to do a good job of inspecting the creature's abilities to...

    D&D 3.x Planescape 3.5 help!

The fastest and best way I can think of to familiarize yourself with Planescape is to play the video game, Planescape: Torment. You could get through quite a bit of it in one day -- 8 or 9 hours of play should get you out of the morgue and into town, doing quests. You'll meet some companions...

    D&D 3.x [3.5] Warlock and General Question

Yeah his question confused me too. But I think he means, "If a Constitution of 16 gives me +3 to hit points and that's all, why do I need to track the 16? Why didn't the game just have the bonus be the only number to track?" The answer for him is, that's not all that any stat does. Every...

Can you use skill focus to achieve other feats?

Not that I know of, no. However, there are feats that will buff up your fort saves.

Think I'm in over my head.

Deset Gled is pretty grim in his assessment, and while I'm on a more positive-thinking side of things, I do fully agree with his "take charge" advice. If you are going to be the DM, your first games ever probably should only use books that you are at least passingly familiar with. So, tell...

Can you use skill focus to achieve other feats?

Not by a strict reading of the rules, no. Most DMs don't get the nuance, however, and allow for sloppy bookkeeping. Anyway, the wording is precise. A "rank" is the amount of points you put in due to leveling up your skill points. It isn't any extra points that come from feats, skill...

Arcanum for PC: Worth getting in this day and age?

It's actually better now than it was before, for the simple reason that there are fan mods that make it bearable. For example, there is a fan mod that will increase the limited screen size (800x600) up to modern screen sizes. Generally, install the official patches first, in order. Then apply...

    Gnome Names

There are a couple of gnome name generators that seem to follow the theme I like for gnome names. I want them to be different from halflings/hobbits. This one seems OK when I select to use "warcraft" as the basis for the names: Slack 'n' Hash- Gnome Name Generator But this is the one I love...

    How does Charm Person work?

If you ever manage to make a saving throw against the spell, you'll know that he was trying to cast in a hostile manner. See here: So you may not know which spell was cast upon you unless you get a high Spellcraft roll, but you will feel a hostile force or tingle, and that ought to be enough...
