    Appropriate ECL for 10 players?

I prefer this encounter calculator: Encounter EL & XP Calculator 4.01 Mostly it's the same code, but it does seem cleanly organized to me, and with lots of explanatory text. Anyway, regardless of which calculator you use, the rest of the gang here is correct: with 10 characters every...

Fighting a Dragon at low levels

OK, got it. So where in there does it say, "Black Dragons don't pick up Flyby Attack until the Mature Adult stage?" Maybe a page number & paragraph? Thanks for the help. EDIT: Nevermind. Dragonwriter addressed it when he edited his post, about 4 before mine. Thanks Dragonwriter!

Fighting a Dragon at low levels

Um... can you tell me where to look in the dragon description to find the text that says that? Because all I see in the text is that dragons have feats based upon hit dice -- in no prescribed order. In fact, while there is a list of possible feats presented, I guess to aid first-time DMs, the...

Fighting a Dragon at low levels

I'm with Runestar. As a DM, I would have to deliberately not use the built-in characteristics of dragons in order for it to be a fair match for a group like the one described (no wizard, sword & board melee-types).

Fighting a Dragon at low levels

I'm not sure if anyone said this, but learn about readying actions. The dragon can do flyby attacks, so it's possible for it to attack and then be far away during your turn. Rinse & repeat, and even a young dragon will be able to kill off many foes without suffering a single injury. The...

    feats question

Yeah, the sort of broad generalization is that extraordinary = physical benefits that cannot be "turned off" by an antimagic field. So feats like cleave, which are merely about a swordsman becoming competent at swinging a sword, should be extraordinary. On the other hand, a feat like Night...

    Permanent Light Object

Or you could just cast Glowing Orb from the spell compendium for 150 gp, as it creates a permanently glowing glass orb that is also easy to control mentally.

    D&D 3.x Anyone still making 3.5e material?

I've stuck with 3.5. I've flirted with Pathfinder, and tried 4th. However, I've found both wanting. So I've stuck with 3.5 edition, as have the 20 or so people that I play with in various games. I don't need new products -- for better or worse, there was soooo much product made for 3.5...

Help I think one of my players is a metagaming munchkin...

I'm going to fall on the other side of the coin and say that talking to the player about it -- like intelligent adults -- is going to fail, and that being passive aggressive is going to succeed. The problem with talking to someone like grown adults is that the other person needs to behave like...

    Cleric Domain Question

Having just re-read the cleric class, and also the tiny bit of text about domains in the PHB's chapter on magic, I think it's clear to me (as a DM) that the authors assumed a player would pick two different domains, but did not force it to be so. I mean, I see no language barring it. So unless...

    D&D 3.x 3.5- Multiple shots with a bow?

I'm confused. Isn't 110' just the first range increment? And can't you have 5 range increments? So isn't 550' the more likely range limitation? Maybe I don't understand a nuance or something.

    resurgence vs. feeblemind

Feeblemind specifically calls out a handful of spells that can counter it, but Resurgence is not one of them. However, Resurgence came out in later books, and specifically says it allows a reroll of a saving throw. So can someone under a Feeblemind have a Resurgence cast upon them to get a...

D&D 3.x [3.5] Bard: what enables him to assemble a team?

I have a 2nd level bard in a new game. While working out the backstory for how all the PCs met, we decided that my bard was one of many sent out as a herald looking for heroes... and it just so happened that his team is the one that was good enough to make it back and get the job. So... I've...

10 Necromancer Games Adventures: Which Ones Should I Get?

Of the modules on your list, I have Durbenford and Grey Citadel. I am currently running Durbenford. I have to say that while I'm loving it in some ways, other ways not so much. It's good in that it appears like the author climbed inside my head and wrote out just the kind of stuff that I...

Ever had a game stolen from you?

To be fair to S'mon, there is a valid point in there -- we're merely debating the degree to which we differ, not if the concept itself is bad. I play a game that is set to run every other week. In the last 6 months, we should have had 13 games. Due to "perfectly reasonable" cancellations...

Ever had a game stolen from you?

I don't really see the problem. I always thought this was how these things were supposed to go. I would much rather be relieved of duty than have some player casting daggers in my back while I ran the game. It doesn't seem they were passive aggressive or deceptive or anything. They simply...

D&D with "alt film" stars: the WotC interview

I don't know about anyone else, but I found Zak to be insightful. I think his comment, which I've quoted, is pretty savvy in regards to how people work. With his insight, I think my next newbie-friendly game will be friendlier.
