No upper limit on temporary HPs?

Ah. The way I'm reading that section is, "any time the temporary HP cause the character's total HP to exceed the normal HP." In other words, any time a character has even a single hit point beyond the normal max, they are in danger. Thus, a 3rd level character with 15 HP and 5 HP from the...

No upper limit on temporary HPs?

Why? A 3rd-level character with 15 HP can't explode from being infused with a constant positive energy that adds 5 temporary HP? If it doesn't work as I suggest, then we have problems with infinite hit points, as outlined above. If it does work as I suggest, then we not only don't have the...

No upper limit on temporary HPs?

I thought temporary hit points from the same source don't stack. Thus, any creature in such an effect would simply have a constant 5 HP more than normal. If they were knocked down, they would replenish up to 5 HP over normal again.

    Looking for a adventure book

I think your DM is more secretive than just hiding the module. I think he's changed the names of the locations, so that you cannot search for discussions about the module online. For example, the "Burning Kettle Inn" doesn't exist anywhere on the Internet except here, according to Google. The...

Fun magic for an NPC crafter?

I'm probably getting into too much detail with my world building, but I've statted up an NPC in Heroforge that is supposed to be the town alchemist. He's a 5th level gnome expert (house rule in my campaign: experts can craft alchemical items, no spell casting needed). He offers 3 services to...

Custom Character Sheet - Input wanted

It's OK. Your section for spells is pretty anemic. If you want a really good character sheet that you could model yours after, try Sun Rain Studios. That might give you some hints about what your sheet is missing, if anything. Those sheets work really well with 3.5 too.

    Attack of Opportunity resets... when?

Well, the tree has 15' reach. A full withdraw only protects you from AOO in the space you started in. So it wouldn't protect from movement through 3 spaces. I got that rule right, at least. Right? I hope. :)

    Attack of Opportunity resets... when?

You must spread some experience points around before giving it to Jeff Wilder again. You must spread some experience points around before giving it to Vegepygmy again. You must spread some experience points around before giving it to frankthedm again.

    Attack of Opportunity resets... when?

The way I've been running my combat sessions is that at the top of the round, everyone's AOO gets reset. We go through the round, AOO gets used up, and then at the top of the next round, it resets again. This has worked very fine until today's very dangerous combat. There were 2 characters...

Military leader, town leader - title?

Thank you guys so much! I do like Marshal, but I note that it is a rather insignificant title in some cases. One definition I saw put it as "the master of a house." So, it sounds & feels right to me, but I dislike that some definitions diminish it. I think I will go with Captain, and he will...

Military leader, town leader - title?

I'm doing some world-building, and I've created a small town that has some martial types as the leaders. These leaders are levels 6, 5, and 5. They are not the most powerful characters in town in terms of sheer class levels, but they are the ones who rolled up their sleeves and turned a small...

    Starting "Old SChool" gaming

Agreed. It sounds like it was written by someone who wasn't playing D&D back in the 70s/80s.

A feat to gain an animal cohort?

Yes, handle animal has a bunch of tricks listed for animals, along with DCs to get pets to perform them. Pirates with parrots would use this system. So I thought I'd bump this thread to note that the printed softcover book "Creatures of Freeport" contains a section with a bunch of interesting...

    Starting "Old SChool" gaming

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but there is one or two things about old school that I didn't like, and I believe I found a system that caters to my tastes. Specifically, I *really* enjoyed the 3rd edition (and now 4th edition) "unified d20 mechanic." That is, bigger numbers are always...

Why do DM's like Dark, gritty worlds and players the opposite?

I get that. Good. I guess I just don't know why disagreeing with RC took the form of saying, "someone unfamiliar with 4E could garner a negative view of the game if they accept your commentary as valid." That seems less like disagreeing and more like an appeal -- "Hey, help me protect my...

Why do DM's like Dark, gritty worlds and players the opposite?

I don't know why RC is obligated to use wording that protects your game. We're not allowed to use negative connotations for a particular edition? I do not like that early editions used THAC0. I prefer the unified d20 mechanic. I would describe THAC0 as "sucky." But do I need to not say the...

dnd 3.5 - Challenge my party.

You know, one of the issues I faced was that I couldn't juggle all of a creature's abilities. It might have damage resistance, or spell resistance, or a free grapple attack (or whatever), and I would forget. So the monster stat block might show a CR of 8, but I was playing the monster at a CR...

Why do DM's like Dark, gritty worlds and players the opposite?

I don't know your situation entirely, so I can't really comment, but couldn't this problem be bad DMing rather than an issue with player/character separation? For example, my players (well, one in particular) like to gamble. They like it so much we eventually bought Three Dragon Ante, and use...
