    Best System for Wilderness Exploration

I've run wilderness exploration in 4E at my game table using the skill challenge system with never a hex in sight. A friend uses classic D&D plus massive amounts of homebrew with a detailed hex map. What are your experiences with Wilderness Exploration? What worked and what didn't? Any...

    D&D 4E 4E Wilderness Adventures

It just struck me that for supposedly being a "points of light" setting, 4E doesn't really have any rules for "classic" wilderness exploration. I'm thinking of hex maps, terrain types, and random encounter and monster tables, with some hexes having predefined encounters. I have run wilderness...

Tips for Running a Game in a D&D Encounters-Type Environment?

Nope, I was not aware of it. I abandoned the "official" boards during the Gleemax fiasco, checked it out briefly during its ugly, painful transition to "Communities", and have never gone back.

Tips for Running a Game in a D&D Encounters-Type Environment?

To be clear I'll be running D&D Encounters at my FLGS. But I don't know why you couldn't use a different system to do something like it. That makes me wonder: Are there other systems better suited to Encounters-style gameplay?

Tips for Running a Game in a D&D Encounters-Type Environment?

Any tips for running a game in a D&D Encounters-type environment? I'll be DMing D&D Encounters this season. I played the last season and jumped in to DM the last session when the regular DM couldn't make it. I DM a 4E game at home with a group that's been together for ~5-6 years. Areas of...

    Desert of Athas Dungeon Tiles

I agree too tight is better than too loose. The problem is that they are way too tight; many pegs can't fit in the holes at all until extreme measures are taken.

    Desert of Athas Dungeon Tiles

Didn't see this when I started my own thread with a complete text spoiler of every tile here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/4e-discussion/277871-dungeon-tiles-desert-athas.html I have a major complaint about how hard it is to get the 3D pieces together. I've had to get out my hobby knife to trim...

    MM3 Typos

Yes, my post was deliberately overblown. I hoped my "I expect perfection" line would have tipped it. It didn't translate as well as I had hoped. Carry on. The Ogremoch typo is pretty bad, though.

    MM3 Typos

First flip through I catch more than a half-dozen editing problems. Looking back I find: p3, the Table of Contents: Only the first word of a listing is capitalized, unless later words are proper names. However, in the full listings, the entire name is capitalized. p3, the Table of Contents...

    MM3 recycled art

I have no problem with the art looking like previously published minis. Just like I not only have no problem with but desire my minis to look like my MM art. My only problem with the MM3 art is that not every creature is illustrated. Someone please tell me what a Shard of Uralinda looks like so...

    Dungeon Tiles: Desert of Athas

So, I'm impressed. (Disclaimer: This whole post is a spoiler.) I've never purchased dungeons tiles before. I rock it old school, drawing on graph paper for my group and using whatever minis or ripped pieces of paper with names or crude doodles when going tactical is required. But I'm going to...

    D&D 4E 4E Book advice

If you are a DM, get the DMG2, especially before your players hit paragon. I also like Adventurer's Vault a lot, but am not a DDI subscriber. Everything in these books is probably already online.

d20 vs. 3d6 "dice heresy" by Chris Sims

(It's alive! It's moving! It's alive! The thread is alive!) One aspect totally missing from this discussion is the whole "soft" side of the d20. Rolling a d20 feels great. (Literally, I love the feel and sound of rolling a well-crafted d20. Rolling dice pools feels unwieldy and sounds worse.)...

What materials must a Player have/bring with them at a game session?

A gift for the host (and the GM if they are different). Quality alcohol is traditional; a food treat is acceptable as well. The gift need not be lavish. It is also proper to send a brief note within the next day or two thanking the host (and the GM if they are different) for opening their home...

It's Not the GM's Job to Make Sure People Have Fun

I've never heard anyone say this who didn't mean the DM should be considering the needs and desires of the players when crafting a session, but the players also must adhere to a social contract to not be jerks. To literally mean "I leave it up to the GM to ensure I have a good time" is such an...

Epic-Tier, or High-Level Gaming and You

Wow. This raises some major concerns for me. I'm glad I asked well before I start running anything near this level. Has anyone analyzed the epic-tier 4E monsters to figure out what the designers were thinking versus how they actually play out? From these anecdotes, it sounds like a heaping...

Epic-Tier, or High-Level Gaming and You

Have you played in an Epic-Tier 4E game or other High-Level experience? Have you run a game for players of such a god-like level? What lessons can you pass down to someone prepping to run such a campaign in fall 2010? (I'm planning on running 4E E1–3, but will be modifying as I see fit before...

    DDM & 4ed

I'll believe it when I see it. I just don't see how this makes sense from a strategy or profit perspective at this point. The DDM game would need a complete re-relaunch at this point, fully separating it from 4E, especially since it has been made clear cardboard tokens will be widespread...
