#RPGaDAY Day 16: What RPG do you enjoy using as is?

As is. Out of the box. Unmodified… Once again, for me it’s Shadow of the Demon Lord.

#RPGaDAY Day 15: Which RPG do you enjoy adapting the most?

I LOVE adapting the d20 system. D&D 3rd Edition is what got me into role playing and I dove into the rules. I know them pretty well and love tinkering with it to develop games I want to run. Fate Core is a close second.

#RPGaDAY Day 14: Which RPG do you prefer for open-ended campaign play?

Much as I don’t care for the old World of Darkness, I think the lack of definitive levels makes it easy to keep going without realizing just how powerful your character is getting. FFG’s Star Wars stuff is similar, but playing a Force user makes it very easy to realize how powerful you become.

#RPGaDAY Day 13: Describe a game experience that changed how you play.

As a player, it was playing L5R as Matsu Ken. As a GM, it was running a d20 Modern session I had planned out, only to have to throw out most of what I wrote as my players did seriously unexpected stuff. That taught me to be more flexible in my adventure design and allow for the unexpected.

#RPGaDAY Day 12: Which RPG has the most inspiring interior art?

‘Most inspiring interior art’? In terms of inspiring for the game? I’d say Shadow of the Demon Lord (surprise!) and Legend of the Five Rings 4th Edition.

#RPGaDAY Day 11: Which ‘dead game’ would you like to see reborn?

I don’t know how much anyone would classify it as ‘dead’ but I’d love to see d20 Modern redone if not outright revived. I thought the archetypes based on each of the six stats were perfect and gave d20 way more flexibility than the standard D&D classes.

#RPGaDAY Day 10: Where do you go for RPG reviews?

For reviews, I usually come here. There’s the occasional mention of an rpg on io9. And if I come across an rpg people are talking about but not giving details about, I usually turn to Google.

#RPGaDAY Day 09: What is a good RPG to play for about 10 sessions?

If you utilize the available material for the game, Shadow of the Demon Lord is perfect for ten (or eleven) sessions, especially if you use the Tales of the Demon Lord campaign. Each adventure is designed to be one session (of varying lengths of time), and the idea is that when the PCs finish an...

#RPGaDAY Day 08: What is a good RPG to play for sessions of 2hrs or less?

I'd say Fate Core is pretty good for 2 hour sessions.

#RPGaDAY Day 07: What was your most impactful RPG session?

Most impactful... I'm not sure I can pick just one. However, the only moments I can think of all involved one character and one game. The game was L5R 2nd edition, I had just joined my rpg group (with whom I still game 15-16 years later), and the first character I made for anyone's game in the...

#RPGaDAY Day 06: You can game every day for a week. Describe what you’d do!

Game every day for a week? Does this mean running, playing, or both? If it's both, I'd start by running a couple sessions/adventures of Shadow of the Demon Lord on Sunday, Play D&D 5th on Monday, FFG's Star Wars on Tuesday, nag my one friend into running L5R 4th on Wednesday, HOPEFULLY convince...

#RPGaDAY Day 05: Which RPG cover best captures the spirit of the game?

Yeah, the players are the little guys and most likely going to die in that fight.

Fantasy Flight Games Announces Genesys RPG

It would be similar. Imagine rolling 6d20 with 5 Fate dice (I'm choosing numbers at random), and 3d20s are red and 3 Fate dice are red. The non-red are yours while the red ones are what your trying to overcome. If you roll successes on your dice, they'll counter the successes on the reds. Any...

#RPGaDAY Day 04: Which RPG have you played the most since August 2016?

First off... Darren Pearce! Hail Robert Schwalb! That said, my group votes every week on who runs (we have two sessions every Sunday). We've had FFG's Star Wars and D&D 5th with one guy, original Deadlands and Fate Core with another, Champions and Hackmaster with a third, an old-school World of...

#RPGaDAY Day 03: How do you find out about new RPGs?

Here, for the most part. Occasionally I'll stumble across something on Kickstarter. That's actually what got me doing Kickstarters; I was googling rules for Fate for a Dresden Files game I was going to run and the KS for Fate Core currently going at that time. I've backed a good number of rpgs...

#RPGaDAY Day 02: What is an RPG you would like to see published?

I'd love to see a modular rpg where you could add in elements or take out parts you don't like/don't fit the game you want to run. I realize that most rpgs could be considered modular via house rules, but what I'm talking about would be a system that could be as crunchy or story-based as you...

#RPGaDay Day 01: What published RPG do you wish you were playing right now?

Without a doubt: Shadow of the Demon Lord. I would LOVE another chance to actually play and not be the one running the game. I only got to play once, and I had the fortune of Robert Schwalb himself being the GM. After that, I'd love to play L5R 4th edition again or a good game of Fate Core (or...

Critical Role Delve into Critical Role's campaign setting with co-writer James Haeck!

Wow. Cool. Thanks for responding. I always enjoy when something I've commented on gets attention from someone in the business. I really do feel the resurrection rules are something that needs to be in core D&D because like I said it's too easy to come back if the funds are available to the...

Critical Role Delve into Critical Role's campaign setting with co-writer James Haeck!

Does its inclusion on the show REALLY mean it was created to add drama? Or could Mercer have simply thought coming back from death just too easy as they got higher level? Personally, I think the resurrection rules are a great addition to D&D (even if it's homebrewed) and think it's something...

    Random Character Backstory idea

Ever since I started watching Dark Matter, I've been really intrigued by the idea of characters that don't know their own backgrounds and slowly discovering who they are. Or rather, who they were. Because of that I've wanted to try a game where I make my each of players write up a character...
