New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

This is where we differ. I find it more fun to have player skill tested. More fun to figure out a riddle myself than roll a skill check. More entertaining to check the statue for secret compartments than just roll a check for the entire room. More enjoyable to come up with a good argument...

New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

Are you saying that having D&D support multiple styles (including those we don't prefer) is claiming it for our own? I don't see it that way, I see it as having a game that can be enjoyed by as many people as possible. And my post you quoted even said I don't care what the default is, so it...

New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

I don't really care what the default is as long as it is easy to go the other way. But I suspect that another war will be fought regardless of which they go with.

New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

In a game without personal interaction skills, you don't "build a diplomatic character" so neither of these applies. You cannot build a diplomatic fighter, you can create a fighter and play him diplomatically. You will not find it unfair that you created a diplomatic character that was...

New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

Yes, exactly. And that is why it was awesome. The fighter could be a diplomatic dude and convince titan to aid the party through a logical argument, the cleric could find a secret door. Those character's players did not have to leave the room during the negotiation scene or the find the secret...

New Legends & Lore: Player vs. Character

I recently ran a D&D game with no skills. And it was awesome. No diplomacy skill meant having to talk to the NPCs, no search skill meant having to interact with the environment. Far too many of my previous games had turned into "You see a room." "I rolled a 27 spot." "You see a secret door."...

AD&D 1E Core 1e vs. Core 2e: What are the mechanical differences?

Also, grappling, overbearing, etc. from the 1e DMG was removed. And many spells got caps (such as fireball at 10d6, previously no limit). I also recall that the rate of progression of "THAC0" for various classes changed from 1e to 2e. Although we didn't call it that, we used THAC0 in 1e using...

WIR S1 Tomb of Horrors [SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!!]‏

No, he calls ignoring the pit "carelessness." He does not call it careless to avoid the trap. I think there is a significant difference.

Praise and element or aspect of a game or edition you don't like.

4E: I like the concept of 'combat advantage' a lot.

WIR S1 Tomb of Horrors [SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!!]‏

That bothers me too, especially because the picture shows them as flat without a single indication of depth. If they were drawn as shaded 2D representations of spheres, I wouldn't have minded so much.

    Mearls: The core of D&D

I think the list is too long. I've played without Alignment, Gold Coin Standard, and Rolling for Initiative, and it still felt like D&D. I would say that polyhedral damage dice is part of the D&D experience. It wouldn't feel like D&D to me without those d4 daggers and d8 swords.

    Level one...hero or schlub?

I like a game where I can choose either. So I prefer a level-based game that starts weak. If I want the characters to be heroes, I can always set the starting level higher.

    HP Tokens

I thought it was great, but I'm a gambler and like the feel of chips and know the values at a glance. Others were less enamored. No one outright hated it, but some people thought having chips made the game feel less RPG and more board game. We were also using the black chips to mark used...

    HP Tokens

We used poker chips to track hit points when we first started playing 4e. But we did the full hit point total, using white=1, red=5, green=25 convention. I'm not sure why we stopped.

Has one of the people in your campaign ever died in real life?

Wow, I have no idea how I would handle something like that. My heart goes out to you. There's a tradition in TV that when an actor dies during a show's run, his or her character dies in the show. This allows them to deal with the death on the show, and not have another actor step into the...

D&D 3.x gamers who skipped 4e, why are you not "upgrading" to Pathfinder?

3.5 is a great game, and I'm sticking with it. I don't see Pathfinder as an upgrade any more than I see Arcana Evolved or 4E as a upgrade. They aren't. They're different games. I find that 3.5 fits my DMing needs the best.
