Ideas for a "Shapechanger" Base Class

I've been thinking about creating a shapeshifting base class for some time. I hope to use this thread to organize my thoughts and work through some ideas I've had. (Chances are, I'll only find the time to work on it sporadically.) If anyone is interested, I would appreciate any thoughts and...

Ideas for a "Shapechanger" Base Class

Soulshifter A Soulshifter is a shapeshifter, able to alter his appearance and form either fully or in part. The Soulshifter may take a single other form or many. He may create powerful natural weapons or defenses, grow larger or smaller, develop new senses or modes of movement, or enhance...

How do you bring 4.0 and 3.5 classes together?

One word: Feats. Rewrite whatever powers you like from 4e as 3rd/3.5 Edition Feats. You could also repackage them as "alternate class features" to limit them to a certain class, if you'd prefer. This also gives you the option of offering them to replace standard class features, so that there...

    Increased Nonmagical Healing HR

Hi Voadam. I think your plan is quite sound. I can think of only two minor quibbles. Unless one of the unnamed house rules gives low-level characters more hit points to start, it won't help them as much. When a couple of hp are a matter of survival, characters are still better off waiting...

Size stats for a huge greatsword

For armor, doubling actually kind of makes sense, since the armor wouldn't need to be twice as thick (to offer the same relative protection), just cover more surface area. (Actually, having just written that, I wonder whether quaprudeling wouldn't be the best rule for armor?)

    Out-monking a Monk in 20 levels.

My favorite is the "City Brawler" variant Barbarian. It is in Dragon 349, pg. 92. (I didn't post this sooner because the original discussion was limited by sourc, but since several other posters went afield... ;) ) Loses: medium armor, shields, martial weapons Gains: 1st Level Feat...

    Pimp my Archivist

Human Paragon levels might interest you. You get a free martial weapon proficiency, a new class skill of your choice, a +2 bonus to an ability score, d8 hit points, and two levels of casting over 3 levels. It would provide some variety without taking the character too far off on a tangent.

    Revised monk

Ki Frenzy: +2 to strength and +2 to Dexterity. Speed increases by 10 feet, plus flurry of blows (making one extra attack per round while suffering a -2 penalty on every attack) It would also be neat if each elemental school had a different combat ability reflecting differing fighting styles...

    Revised monk

If you went to college 15 years ago, you probably thought it was inane, but had to live with it as a requirement. I did. After a while, you get so used to it that it becomes force of habit. (I used "they" too, until my college writing instructors started marking off for it.)

    Revised monk

This is potentially too much for a second level character, and is still pretty sweet later on, given the bonus type. (It'll also help alot with iterative attacks with flurry of blows, too.) A progressive bonus would be better balanced. Since you didn't list it with the basic class features...

    Revised monk

Kerrick--- I haven't had the opportunity for a detailed look yet, but plan to when I get the chance... Quick question: What did you want to balance this class against? Core, core + splatbooks, other custom (homebrewed) classes, etc? It makes a big difference. At first glance, it's got...

    Warforged and Gender

I'm surprised that no one mentioned the theory/speculation that Warforged contain the souls of fallen soldiers. I read this idea on these boards as a proposed explanation for their inate combat prowess (or at least their ability to quickly assimilate the basics of warrior training)... echoes of...

Can Monks imbue their unarmed attacks?

I checked SS... it's called a "Necklace of Natural Weapons". (Very original.) It costs 600gp + the cost of enhancements x the number of natural attacks affected.

Can Monks imbue their unarmed attacks?

In addition to the Kensei PrC, there is a magic item in Savage Species (Necklace of <something>... Claws, maybe?) that allows natural attacks to be enhanced as weapons.

PHB2 Druid Shapeshifter / Monk like

You don't get x2 benefit from Power Attack with a "sole natural weapon", only with an actual manufactured weapon: From the FAQ: You don't get x2 benefit from Power Attack with an unarmed strike, either.

PHB2 Druid Shapeshifter / Monk like

Yep. The damage asociated with each form is meant to be appropriate for the level at which it can be assumed. However, it can be increased RAW via Improved Natural Attack or the Warshaper PrC. What you're suggesting is a free boost, so it really depends on the campaign's power level and what...
