    D&D 5E (2014) Level 20 Dragon Fight design advice

Give it some form of spellcasting, with high level spells, or maybe high level psionics. The old 3.5 Invulnerability power might be good to try. Some of the usual tricks like grappling the target to force concentration checks don't work so well on a dragon.

D&D General Struggling to get started

#1. You're on the right track. Nothing in your OP is incorrect! You can do it! #2. The DM's Guild website has a LOT of adventures ranging from single-session one-shots to year-long campaigns in length. Look at the highest rated ones first. For a group with kids who enjoy some silly...

D&D General So what is high level play like?

As a DM who's run a number of high-level battles with 5+ enemy types including 3 types of spellcasters and multiple defenses, it is HARD to remember all the options for everything and keep it moving at a fast pace.

D&D General So what is high level play like?

3.5 takes a lot of work to build high level characters or monsters, and the math breaks down. 5e is fun. I have DM'd a campaign (Against the Idol of the Sun, campaign log on enworld and giantitp) that went to 20+2 epic boons, and enjoyed it. The players are a bit harder to make feel at risk...

D&D 5E (2014) Undying Warlock Among the Dead mechanics

That's how I read it, although particularly intelligent undead (Strahd) could probably overcome this. I would not interpret it that way as a DM due to how easily it could be exploited.

D&D 5E (2014) 9 Characters using the Encounter Building Math

This. 7th level has good damage, but they're a bit squishy-ish (not a ton of healing, not enough spell slots for great defenses, not a bunch of +AC/save items). That said, there are 9 of them. I'd probably count them around equal to an 11th or 12th level party, but beware of AOE damage being...

D&D General How do people play so quickly? (# of sessions per adventure?)

In combat, a lot of it has to do with people picking what they are doing before their turn starts, and rolling dice and doing math quickly. At high levels, it can be a swing of 2 minutes for a single person's single turn in combat. The same also applies to the DM. On a more campaign level...

D&D General Houserules - Do You Collaborate or Dictate?

I recently started a Baldur's Gate II game, with some more extensive houseruling of some things to give it a bit of a 2e feel. I ran everything by the players in session 0. I don't think anyone has suggested any other changes to me; I'm the only one who hangs out on forums and thinks about...

D&D General Some Interesting Stats About D&D Players!

Taken with lots of grains of salt. And some salty responses! Ages of people I've sat at a table to play with in the last month: 40 (me) 54 56 50-ish 25-ish 17

    D&D 5E (2014) How many feats is a 5e level worth?

It depends on which levels, too. level 1 to level 2, level 2 to level 3 are huge jumps. Level 15 to level 16 is not such a big jump.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you set DCs?

Can anyone do it easily? Don't roll. Can an average healthy adult do it some of the time? 10. Does it need someone strong/skilled/trained? 15. Is it pretty hard and require an expert to likely succeed? 20. Is it superhuman? 30. The only time I used a DC 30 with a skill check was following...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is character creation at higher levels quick/easy or slow/complex?

Much faster than 3.5, especially when using D&D Beyond. When making NPC statblocks that use PC abilities, it's faster for me to use DNDB to generate all the base numbers, then type them into the MM format than it is to calculate from scratch.

Against the Idol of the Sun: A 5e high-level campaign log

Session 41: 4/1/2023 The party is escorted directly to the leader of the Yuan-ti village, who is happy to see them…they are important, and Teador is trailed by a number of people as he carries the Ssword of Sseth. It will take a few days to find someone who may have records of the Teleport...

D&D General The Hidden Stress of D&D

    D&D 5E (2014) Halflings are the 7th most popular 5e race

I ended up picking a halfling once or twice for one-shots when playing at the FLGS where some people use critical fail rules. Crit fails are a terrible houserule, and halflings are immune to them.

WotC WotC'S May Community Update Talks School Support, Accessibilty, & Creator Marketplaces

Are they planning to fix the stuff in D&D Beyond that hasn't worked for years, like making basic spells or class features like Mage Armor or Barbarian Rage actually show up on character sheets when they are in effect? Edit: Just realized this is a "WOTC update" not a "DND Beyond" update. My...

    D&D 5E (2014) When Did 5E Peak Quality Wise?

Before Tasha's. Tasha's has some good stuff in it, but it also has a lot of stinkers.

D&D General Ben Riggs on how to make D&D a $1 billion brand

And yet most reviews of WOTC adventures seem to include "This needs work" or "This only makes sense if the party does X" or "This could be a lot better."

D&D General What ever happened to the Cavalier?

Pointing out that horses drastically improve strategic and tactical mobility is... well, historically accurate. It makes me want to make them more useful.
