D&D General 70% Of Games End At Lvl 7?

I have not had any problems DMing at high levels, as long as I don't have 6 different enemy types with unique spell lists for each. You just have to be willing to see the party hit really hard. My BG2 campaign just had the party fight Jon Irenicus in Suldanesselar. It lasted a round and a...

D&D General 70% Of Games End At Lvl 7?

I like the chaos and unpredictability of high-level play!

D&D General 70% Of Games End At Lvl 7?

IRL campaigns I have DMd: Castle Dracula (Castlevania): 3 to 13 Against the Idol of the Sun: 13 to 20+2 boons Westvault Explorations (episodic): 1 to about 6, 1/2 the party had a job change & relocated Baldur's Gate 2: 1 to 17, level 18 coming up. May end, may go ToB, may go Watcher's Keep...

D&D General Barbarian - Best Damage

Great Weapon Master locks you into a specific weapon and style. I don't like it especially since it forces Reckless Attack instead of making it optional. Additionally, if you look at the Barbarian's class features, it's the best class for grappling and shoving thanks to Advantage and later a...

Critical Role Announces 2026 Live Tour Dates, Three Shows in Europe

Fun fact: You can drive from the Pacific ocean to the Atlantic ocean and spend over 1/3 of your trip in Texas. El Paso is closer to Long Beach than it is to Texarkana, and Texarkana is closer to Savannah than it is to El Paso. It's a bit over 800 miles, or about 1300km. I don't think I've...

Critical Role Announces 2026 Live Tour Dates, Three Shows in Europe

Weatherford to Royse City, Lancaster to Gainesville! And still growing by about 100,000 people per year. It blew my mind a bit when I found out that the population of DFW was greater than the entire population of Ireland. This is an actual event close enough that I could make it, but since I...

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

If we have more kids I would totally go for a stuffed Owlbear instead of a stuffed bear as a toddler toy! It's a corporate reorg, so the name is just that - a name. We'll see what changes about their actions.

D&D General D&D Beyond's Users Online Over Last Year

July to July, it looks like they went from 2500 users down to about 1900. A 20%+ drop is not healthy. I think it has to do with 5.24 and the botched (forced) rollout. I suppose they have more internal data.

D&D General How to DM, best resource

I read the first 200 pages of Justin Alexander's book and then told my son he could read it. He's about 80 pages in and just DMd the sample adventure. Aside from misreading a "this tunnel is 180' long but we're not drawing that out" measurement as "there's a pit you have to cross" it went...

D&D General D&D/TTRPG as therapeutic escape

One of my players has been attending by Discord the last couple of weeks. He recently had a terminally ill family member move in with him. That family member went on hospice recently with a very short time left to live. He was late logging on to the game last night after making the drive home...

D&D 5E (2024) Man I hate the organization of the 2024 Monster Manual

I have the 2014 monster cards and thought they were great until I realized that they didn't include any of the beasts or NPCs. I did just realize that they're an alternative that I can sort and hand to my kids after pulling out all the yucky stuff that they are not ready to see (devils...

Jess Lanzillo Departs Wizards of the Coast

I've been with the same company for 21 years (I'm 42, so...) but I think a 4-5 year turnover is pretty normal.

D&D General Which Ranger Companion Solution Do You Prefer/Use

My son is having fun playing his 2014+Tasha's Beastmaster. His bear has its own mini and everything. It goes down sometimes, but since it scales with levels, it's up to 65 or 70hp and AC 17 at this point. He can also use its bonus action to have it attack twice for 1d8+7ish (don't recall)...

D&D 5E (2014) My Take on the Modron (Houserule)

I might want to add THP on too. A lot of the monodrones, duodrones, etc. have sub-Fireball level HP if I recall correctly.

D&D 5E (2014) My Take on the Modron (Houserule)

The average on a d20 is 10.5. Half of the rolls should be 10, and half of them should be 11. Perhaps the Modrons get the 11s and their opponents get the 10s? It's a slight edge while maintaining something approaching statistical fairness.

D&D 5E (2014) My Take on the Modron (Houserule)

That does sound fun. My other problem with the Modrons is that they are all very low CR in the MM.

    D&D General Campaign epilogues

There was a great "how to do an epilogue" discussion about 4 years ago that I used to help shape the ending of Against the Idol of the Sun, but I don't remember enough details to find it. Include a Fallout-2 style ending recap where you give a few details about what happened to all the major...

D&D General How to DM, best resource

Eh, probably not. The only WOTC-written adventure I've ever played is RHOD. I may start him with a few short one-shots from the DM's Guild, but he and his little brother have been doing their own adventures together for several years, including a long running "button quest" with buttons, their...
