D&D General What does "This adventure is for mid-level adventurers" mean to you?

Without reading the other responses, mid-level means around levels 9-13. They're about "midway through" the 1-20 range, and likely have a decent set of magic items, some AOE capabilities, the ability to raise the dead, and are overall pretty resilient, versatile, and dangerous. Aside from a...

D&D 5E (2024) Magic Missile is saved! Hooray!

The Evoker's 10th level feature just got a lot less fun.

D&D 5E (2014) Dungeoncraft Interview with Mike Mearls

I'm doing that right now. The party is about to hit level 13, so the difference isn't huge...yet. My last campaign was 3-20 (2 campaigns strung together) and I had gotten annoyed by the fact that they could blow off a couple of Fireballs as no big deal (the time they got 16 simultaneous...

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

Sticking with 5e, no interest in 5.24. I think 2/3 of my IRL players would end up confused and making more mistakes with all the fiddly bits they added. As I've said elsewhere, I'm also specifically de-recommending Beyond because there's no way to turn off the 5.24 versions of the rules, and...

D&D General If I had the D&D/WotC Worldbuider job, I would... (+ thread)

This is a great idea! The adventurers don't even have to be "trapped." They can be trying to compete for a Wish or a one-of-a-kind McGuffin, or trade rights or an army for their king. You can have some modules in here that are full gonzo "the time we traveled into the void and fought aliens"...

D&D General If I had the D&D/WotC Worldbuider job, I would... (+ thread)

I'm tempted to say "a world with psionics instead of conventional magic," but that's Dark Sun. Also, if you're replacing half the classes in the PHB with something else, you're treading really close to just making another d20-system game.

D&D General If I had the D&D/WotC Worldbuider job, I would... (+ thread)

I agree! But which setting will have traction in the market? Is it better to go gonzo and unusual, or safe pastiche? Do we need a noblebright setting to contrast to Ravenloft? Are there a hidden 12% of DMs that are running "World of Warcraft in D&D" that make it worth reaching out to...

D&D General If I had the D&D/WotC Worldbuider job, I would... (+ thread)

I would probably do a broad-based poll to see what sort of setting everyone is actually playing in right now. WOTC? Homebrew? If Homebrew, which published setting is it closest to (Dark Sun, Ravenloft, Greyhawk/FR, etc.)? I think quite a few of us run our own setting or setting-agnostic and...

    Second person plural pronoun

Texas: "Y'all," or "All of you" if I want to be more formal. There's also just "You" when addressing a group. People know from context that it's for all of them rather than just one individual. "All y'all" is redundant and too colloquial. • you ones - this is weird-sounding to me, and I have...

    D&D 5E (2024) Githzerai Psion? Thri-kreen Psion? Where's My Psion?

I like the MCDM Talent. It's not "a caster with another name." It is a wholly different subsystem though, so I know it may not fly at some tables.

D&D 5E (2014) Question for folks who use D&D Beyond: How well does it work with the new rules?

Here's what mine looks like. This is for a 16th level (?) Horizon Walker. I can refer back to the main sheet for skill checks, HP, and saves, but everything else is here. This is an older one. These days, I'll have a 1-2 line summary for important spells as well.

D&D 5E (2014) Question for folks who use D&D Beyond: How well does it work with the new rules?

D&D Beyond is convenient for clicking on things, but in actual play IRL I have found that paper sheets are typically faster. Digital rolling is definitely slower. Also, people who write their sheets down by hand tend to remember what's on them much better. The default printout character sheet...

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Aarakocra

If WOTC is changing Humanoids to other creature types because of their origin, when are Tieflings going to be changed to Fiends? Given all the (ugly IMO) 5e art, they already look like they're basically Cambions anyway instead of normal people with a touch of the unnatural.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

It does, thank you! I am now questioning whether or not they're a good choice to include or if I'm just filling in the blanks by using them as a "faction." The Demon side at least has the Glabrezu as a spellcaster, while the Devil side has nothing other than the Pit Fiend's few spells and the...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

I am using a few sometime soon. What you've said is about all I know. They also come in a really weird CR band of 5, 11-13. Nothing higher, nothing lower. There is no unifying biology. It's like someone said "I want to make a fox wizard and an evil Grey and an intelligent mosquito. Let's...

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

What differentiates the new orcs from goliaths? They're both tall grey people with lots of endurance. Are goliaths Mountain Orcs? Also, based on the new art I can tell that either orcs don't sunburn or the artist doesn't live in the southern half of the US.

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

This is true. It is also a big challenge to monetization. WOTC wants to sell a big campaign book every year? My Baldur's Gate II campaign is around 55 3-hour sessions in, and the party is only level 11 (about halfway through). That's around 3 years of once per week play unless they decide to...

D&D 5E (2024) Rename Purple Dragon Knight to just Dragon Knight?

My wife has an 11th level PDK and is happy with it. She wanted a simple character, and Barbarian had too many decision points (Rage? No rage? Reckless? No reckless?). It's more versatile than Champion, but without a lot of complexity. The 3rd, 7th, and 10th level abilities are all good. Not...

D&D 5E (2024) Rename Purple Dragon Knight to just Dragon Knight?

If they're serious about maintaining compatibility between 5th edition and 5.24, they need to do this. It's not an update of the PDK/Banneret but a whole replacement with entirely different theming and abilities.

New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

I'm not moving to 5.24, but checked this out from curiousity anyway. They are redefining the PDK from the "You want something simple, here's a party-boosting Fighter that can be a face" to... well, my wife is playing an 11th level PDK right now in Castle Dracula. Her response was "No, you're...
