D&D 5E (2014) Revised Crossbow Expert and Sharpshooter - now with Homebrewery attachment

A "sharpshooter" is someone who is particularly accurate when shooting. This feat deals with that both in removing disadvantage and ignoring cover. The -5/+10 mechanic is very similar to Great Weapon Master. With GWM, you are sacrificing accuracy for power: this makes sense from a melee...

    D&D 5E (2014) Refined PHB feat revisions

What do you think of replacing, at least for feats, Expertise = double proficiency with Expertise = advantage? I thought about this, too. I see two distinct roles for these feats. Dungeon Delver is about overcoming physical obstacles (MacGuyver). Skulker is about being sneaky (Gollum). They...

D&D 5E (2014) Evaluating Range versus Damage (SS vs GWM) - putting a price on range

I feel like Hiding just by ducking out of line of sight for a second seems weird, but maybe it could be done with a successful contested check: the observer's perception vs. the hider's stealth (with advantage for the hider if the observer is being attacked/distracted in any way).

D&D 5E (2014) Evaluating Range versus Damage (SS vs GWM) - putting a price on range

I'm trying to compare those Champion 11 builds, and this is what I've got against AC 17 with hand crossbows for crossbow experts and heavy crossbows for other ranged, greatsword for melee: Melee: GWF+GWM+Str+Str = 31.9 DPR Ranged: Arch+SS+Dex+Dex = 28.4 DPR Ranged: Arch+SS+Dex+XbE = 28.6 DPR...

    D&D 5E (2014) Refined PHB feat revisions

It seems to me that your favorite character type is Rogue/Thief. Most of your choices to modify feats seem to favor the melee rogue, whether avoiding letting others have expertise, or nerfing ranged combat, etc. If this is an accurate observation, I have a few thoughts. You talk of the rogue as...

The more I think about Expertise and Bounded Accuracy, the more I want to limit Expertise. I do, however, think it is something that should be available, if in limited amounts. The Rogue and the Bard each get Expertise for only two skills at a time, and this feat should follow that same maximum...

I like your work a lot! Here are a few feats modified based on yours: Athlete You have undergone extensive physical training to gain the following benefits: - You gain proficiency in the Athletics or Acrobatics skill. If you are already proficient in the skill, you add double your...

True. Do you think most characters will take Trained to boost to expertise? Or will they prioritize other feats or ASIs? Haha. :) I meant, of course, if a non-rogue character wants to be roguish, that will impinge on rogues. But rogues could want to be tankish and impinge on others, too. It...

    D&D 5E (2014) Refined PHB feat revisions

It does open up any generic character to +20 movement. +10 on 30 gets slightly faster than a wood elf, and +10 on 25 matches the wood elf. +20, on the other hand, far outpaces the current generic character. But, as you point out, there are combinations that can do that already. My greater...

Does the +10 speed from Skulker overlap too much with the +10 speed from Mobile? Why are you limiting Sharpshooter but not Great Weapon Master?

No, it is intentional that you can gain both proficiency and expertise in one shot, just at the Knowledge Cleric does.

That is a fair question. If expertise creates a problem against bounded accuracy, is it ok for the rogue or bard to have it? Indeed. Nor does a general granting of access to expertise. The rogue's core skills are only impinged on if a player wants his character to be roguish. Even so, rogues...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rating Wizard Traditions at 2nd Level

+2 ASI or Feat: (8/10) Arcane Ward is almost the same as the Tough feat. You get a few extra HP, but all of it is temporary. It can't be healed with healing magic, but it can be recharged by certain spells. (8/10) Minor Conjuration is an awesome cantrip. You can make anything! But, it's...

Though I do not think it is balanced to increase the cost of expertise, you could limit the choice of expertise as follows: TRAINED You may take this feat more than once. You gain any combination of the following benefits, adding up to 10 points: 5 points: Increase one ability score by 1...

Yes, getting more skills is not always better, and the benefit tapers off the more you get. Nevertheless, for a skill-monkey whose goal is to get all the skills anyway, this helps out a lot. All expertise skills will improve greatly with proficiency bonus, even when not in a preferred stat...

There is more to the rogue than Expertise. Rogues get sneak attack. Rogues are better at dodging. Rogues get an extra saving throw proficiency. Etc. Expertise is only one small part of being a rogue. Giving other classes access to expertise doesn't ruin the rogue. Yes, a Fighter gets an extra...

Good point. Clearly there are some tools that are generally useful, and others that are mostly useless. Maybe they could be grouped into "crafting tools" and "adventuring tools".

A feat like this could be a good replacement for the Variant Human choice. Rather than getting any feat, it could be given specific access to a general feat like this to improve the character but not be overpowered at first level.

I like this. It goes along the lines of my earlier post comparing Cleric domain features: Scaling this up to make languages 1 point and dropping most tools to that level, we would get: 1 point: language, tool (except Thieves' Tools) 2 points: skill, Thieves' Tools, or expertise in existing...
