    Rpg's and miniatures

Yeah, it definitely bonds you to the character, especially if you paint it yourself. It hurts when your PC dies right when you have finished painting a mini that you love! On the other hand, then you get to paint another mini!!!

    Rpg's and miniatures

This actually sounds like a pretty good idea. I still like minis though!

    NPCs as Party Members

I agree with Olgar. I don't like tag-alongs, even if they do fill a "niche". Let's say you don't have a rogue PC in your party. If you just add an NPC to open traps for you, what fun is that? It doesn't add anything to the game. NPC's should not be permanent features of the game.

    Barbarians and reach weapons?

I agree. Cleave is not realistic for any weapon really. So it doesn't make sense to restrict the feat to certain weapons on the basis of realism. Besides, there are numerous ways to envision what might be going on. The simple fact that you have dropped one foe and do not have to maintain...

    Barbarians and reach weapons?

Well, I'd be interested in ANY suggestions about an appropriate reach weapon for ANY barbarian. I guess a spear is an obvious good choice--since it is the most primitive weapon of all. But what about a ranseur, glaive, or spiked chain? Could a barbarian use one of those or would it just seem...

    Uncommon Weapons Use

My understanding was that historically speaking polearms were infantry weapons, not peasant weapons ... although they evolved from simple agricultural and hunting implements. Ranseurs are basically spears. Halberds are an evolved form of axe. A glaive is either a knife or a scythe (I can't...

    Barbarians and reach weapons?

Is it an appropriate choice, or is it really more fitting to use an axe or hammer?

    Who uses a Ranseur?

Is it reasonable to use a ranseur (or some other kind of reach weapon) while mounted?

    Who uses a Ranseur?

The advantage of disarming over tripping is that standing up from prone does not provoke an AoO, while picking up a dropped weapon does! So, if you have Combat reflexes, disarming is awesome! I don't think one would "swing" a ranseur exactly, but I see your point ... you would still need to be...

    Who uses a Ranseur?

Sure, I think lupine or lionine types of races could work nicely with polearms. The character that I am developing is a wild elf barbarian. I'm trying to decide whether a ranseur is an appropriate choice.

    Who uses a Ranseur?

What kind of character would typically use a ranseur? What kind of archetype does it evoke? Everybody knows that an axe in the hand of a dwarf is no surprise, or a bow in the hands of an elf. A lance might be carried by a paladin. Whose hands would you expect to find holding such a thing as...

What makes a truly well-conceived PC?

Whenever you make up a new character, if you're like me, you're looking for a perfect synthesis of just the right distribution of stats, just the right selection of feats and skills and spells, just the right gear, and just the right background and personality. What makes it "just right"? Do...

    Random Encounters?

Actually, yes, we do! But I voted "no" on the poll just because I liked the phrase "they're the devil." I couldn't resist! :p

    Getting older and low Constitution?

How would you end up with a character that old anyway? My character's usually only adventure for a few weeks. By that time they have reached about seventh level ... and then my D&D group breaks up and I have to find a new group and get a new character. But seriously, does your...

    Grugach (wild elves)--preferred class??

Yeah, I wanted to take one level as a ranger, in order to get certain skills that would be cross-class otherwise--skills that i need for a PrC (windrider). I'm excited about being a barbarian wild elf. Barbarian/Ranger would be cooler still.

    Grugach (wild elves)--preferred class??

Rules question: What is the preferred class for a wild elf? Is it wizard, for all elves? In the monster manual, it says "Nomadic and rugged, wild elves favor the sorcerer class rather than wizard, although many are barbarians as well." Does that change their preferred class? (You could ask...

    A Barbarian with style!

I like the idea of a rogue/barbarian. I think the Zen Barbarian idea is a little too paradoxical for me. Zen is complete awareness and focus. Rage is the opposite of that. But maybe I'm just stuck on the words; maybe you're taking things more loosely, which is fine. NEW IDEA...

    2d10 skill checks

Sure, Jens, I think that would work too. It would not have as much of a bell curve as 2d10 would, but it would be similar. And it has the advantage of allowing you to roll more dice. More dice, more fun! By the way, how did you calculate your probabilities? The statistics get more complex...

    A Barbarian with style!

Yes, it is in Masters of the Wild. It allows you to move at your normal movement rate in that manner, so long as there are trees spaced no more than 15 ft. apart. Next best thing to being a monkey!
