    D&D 5E (2014) 2/18/13 L&L column

Maybe they should change the name of L&L to "Reasons NOT to Buy 5E".

    D&D 5E (2014) 2/18/13 L&L column

The game already had nonmagical healing I really think the only way they can reach the conclusions they are drawing is to release a character class that is a non-magical healer, such as the Warlord, and gauge the reactions from there. As of right now, they only have one coordinate on a graph...

    Here Comes . . . the Monk!

I have a hard time seeing Bruce Lee as Lawful either. Alignment restrictions are definitely a deal breaker for me.

    Playtesting in Detail

I really doubt they are going to kill the Draconian and take its stuff...again. From the looks of it, he was just discussing where they would go with campaign specific stuff. I am curious what he means by that though. Would the Draconian and the Warforged be part of the core?

D&D 5E (2014) October Playtest: Yay or Nay?

In answer to DEFCON's question, as to why the current playtest sucks. First off, I don't think WotC is actually that interested in fan input. This is evidenced by their tampering with polls early on, namely the poll that had what casting style people preferred. Initially, pre-tampering...

D&D 5E (2014) October Playtest: Yay or Nay?

Likewise. If they don't take an immediate turn back from this pile, I will consider it a waste of energy to even check on it anymore.

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many knowledge skills.

I have advocated combining them into five or six skills. Just have Magical or Arcane, Religion, Nature, Dungeon, and Local. They really should just bring back the knowledge skills like they were in 4E. Truthfully, they should bring back the 4E skill list altogether and just fill in the 3E...

    D&D 5E (2014) Given the choice...

Provided the game doesn't royally screw up multiclassing, there should be no need for a Gish class. You should be able to make a fully functioning and not gimped version without a separate class. Perhaps a PrC could be used to meld the fighter and wizard abilities together, but there really...

D&D 5E (2014) I'm just not that "Psyched" about Next.

While true, we really don't know the answer to which one was liked more until we see the next playtest. If it backtracks to something more like the first playtest, then it is safe to assume that more people liked the first playtest better, if it continues the trend set forth by the second...

D&D 5E (2014) I'm just not that "Psyched" about Next.

I haven't been psyched about DDN as of late, but the most recent L&L certainly has me psyched. Alternate Magic Systems, baby!

    Playtest Update

While that is certainly true, in this case WotC would be deliberately committing confirmation bias. The bottom line is, if people want their voices heard, they need to participate in the playtest and take the surveys. If they aren't participating, they SHOULD be ignored (to a certain extent).

    Playtest Update

I never said they were. What I am saying is, deliberately ignoring a sizeable portion of participants of the surveys, regardless of their prefered edition, is very bad methods and invalidates the playtest itself. Again, if they are going to do that, they might as well not do the playtest in...

    Playtest Update

Can you point to a post from WotC that explicitly states they are deliberately trying to get a bigger sample of 4E players? Because WotC are the ones that are compiling and collecting data through the surveys, not forums. Who gives a flying fart what people on WotC's boards, these boards, or...

    Playtest Update

So you would trade the lesser bias, selection bias, for a greater one, confirmation bias. That is... interesting. Selection bias can be overcome by a greater sample, which WotC can overcome by such things as advertising and other forms of outreach. Confirmation bias can only be overcome by...

    Playtest Update

So, if the majority of respondents prefer 4E, it must be bias, and there is this phantom fanbase that is apparently too good to participate in the playtest and tell WotC their opinion, but should be pursued ahead of the 4E crowd? They can only cater to the people that tell them what they want...

    Playtest Update

Looks like they are acknowledging their idea that the Wizard MUST be Vancian was a giant mistake. Perhaps through the Tradition system they can make an AEDU Wizard, a Spell Point Wizard, and a full Vancian Wizard.

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

1 probably won't happen, he is just using it as an example. 2-3 are essential for my ability to evoke my favored edition, but the fact YOU can choose to ignore them is the hallmark of a modular edition. The system would be taking care of both of us, which is kind of the point. Good on you...

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

A few things. 1. Dragonlance! (Knight of the Rose) 2. Dragonborn and Tiefling are in, it seems 3. Encounter powers 4. LFQW is back 5. Prestige Classes and all their baggage will be back. 1-3 good, 4-5 bad.

More Than Just a Shaggy Ogre

Considering Medium size spans four feet (with the Minotaur standing nearly a full three feet taller than the Dwarf), why is this all that crazy? The minotaur is four feet taller than the gnome and over twice their height. What would making them the low end of Large add? A foot maybe? That...
