You have a mental link to the dominated creature - it's not much of a stretch to assume, that the 'basics' would be established automatically ('don't attack me, don't speak about your condition') .

I think it would be more a profession skill - most of the time you're actually trying to do something with it, not analyze some historical battle.

There's a battle, but it happens off-screen mostly. The captured death-eaters are in Azkaban, though without dementors to guard them.
