Video game sequels often change the rules. Look at Starcraft and Starcraft 2, similar games, but the mechanics has changed about as much as changed between D&D 4e and 5e. What you are calling sequels is expansions, which as you said don't change how the game work (to a large degree anyway).

delericho I do see the points you are making, but as they have already said they weren't going to go the splat-book route, and if you are correct, they won't be going the adventure route either. It does make me wonder what their business strategy actually is.

delericho WotC does do something very close to direct sales on http://www.dndclassics.com/ and they do have a digital subscription service (DDI), so I don't quite see how they couldn't make some adjustments to one of those two services to make adventure subscriptions a possibility.
