This is where our opinion (or hope) differs. I believe WotC have seen how successful Pathfinder has been with it's adventure-centric approach and wants to use it to increase their core book sales. Their willingness to use external companies to create the adventures, does in my opinion mean that...
I use a lot of premade adventures, and the quality from WotC has in my opinion been very variable. Therefore, I am really happy that Kobold Press have been hired by WotC to do these adventures.
Looking at the price of the PHB/DMG/MM, I am starting to wonder if WotC will be focusing on getting...
I really like the Monster Manual picture. I would probably give it 8.5/10, it's the best front page art I have seen from WotC since AD&D 2e.
I actually didn't buy any of the 4e books, because I found them really boring, with art I disliked. I might end up buying these books though. Partially...
I got the image from amazon.com, they have updated the items with higher resolution images. I still think they are mockups though, or the graphics on them are mockups. The art is probably what they wanted. ;)
The cover graphics are probably mock-ups, they seem a bit too rough to be the final ones. I really prefer these kind of covers to the 3e/4e style. It really reminds me of 2e, which is my favourite edition art-wise. :)
Without the snarky text? How magnanimous of you! That really made me laugh. :D
Btw, the monster manual looks just awesome! I love that they have ditched the stylistic 4e art. This reminds me more of my AD&D 2e books which I really loved. (I remember sneak-reading it in English classes, instead...
Everything goes up and 5e goes 50%* more up than 4e. I don't really have a problem with the cost either, but I do find it kind of expensive.
On the other hand, if they publish a lot less splat books and more adventures, I am going to feel like a winner anyway. I hope that's their strategy, and...
If you are right, and all design/development for the three books are done before they start with layout/editing for the PHB, I do agree with your conclusion. I will probably wait until November before buying the books. A nice three-book rule set with a hefty discount wouldn't hurt either.
Btw...
Hey, I am not saying they should release unfinished products, but I do find it weird that the releases are staggered. It would have been kind of logical to wait until they have finished all the books before releasing any. For instance if they discover that the math doesn't add up completely when...
For the 5e PHB/DMG/MM from amazon you will now have to pay 3x40$ = 120$, while the 4e Core rulebook set for 4e PHB/DMG/MM cost 67$. That's quite a jump in price if you ask me. Earlier I haven't really been too worried about the 5e pricing, because it's the discounted price I will end up paying...
So, 5e basically releases on November 19th when you have access to the PHB/MM/DMG? Kind of hard to create your own stuff until then. I do find this publishing schedule kind of weird, but oh well, doesn't really matter. I will just wait a bit longer.
A really interesting read on how you do things. Thinking about what you are doing, it looks like it works very well*, and quite smoothely, except for the fact that you are recalculating all the monsters every 3-5 levels? As far as I can tell, if you ran this in 5e, with it's bounded accuracy...
You aren't half way to dead yet, no reason to give up on an awesome hobby! ;)
I am playing every thursday from 1900-2300, or more like 2000-2230 since we end up just talking about random stuff for the rest of the time. I have started DM-ing about once a month as well, but those sessions are...
All the images from D&D books I can remember are full drawings, not characters on white background. I have only played D&D Basic, AD&D, 3e and 4e. When I think of it, I mainly remember the AD&D drawings, which I find superior in many ways.
Now I just wonder what it's going to cost from amazon.com (was about 40% off for 4e), and if they are going to have any pdf-releases or other types of digital distribution.
I really hope the start rules includes a good adventure that isn't a railroady dungeon crawl.
