D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on the Realms

I'm not a fan of the Forgotten Realms as a setting for me to use. However, I'm a fan of the Forgotten Realms as a setting to steal things from and use in anything I want. I have stolen The Great Glacier, Neverwinter, Cormanthor, The Moonshae Isles, all as material that I've used in one form or...

Best products from the 4th edition era?

There are quite a few books that I've really enjoyed. From a DM standpoint the ideas/flavor in Manual of the Planes, The Plane Above: Secrets of the Astral Sea, The Plane Below: Secrets of the Elemental Chaos, The Shadowfell: Gloomwrought And Beyond, and Underdark were fantastic. The Despair...

White Plume Mountain - Interview with Lawrence Shick

I believe he also contributed to one or several of the Slavers modules. There was a lot of contribution between Tom Moldvay and Schick.

    Schrodinger's HP and Combat

Correct, and since D&D has always used hp to show a capacity to stay in the fight then it makes sense that anything that recovers hp allows you to stay in the fight (push through) despite "wounds".

    Schrodinger's HP and Combat

That is a good question. Mechanically there is nothing preventing it. If you look at HP as the capability to stay in the fight, then inspiring word can easily be seen as recovering HP, but the "wound" is now "transferred" to the Healing Surge mechanic. The "wound" still exists. This is part...

    D&D 4E JamesonCourage's First 4e Session

No apologies needed. I understand busy schedules. Every game I run I look at the rules as a draft baseline. If the rule works well in play, I keep it. If the rule doesn't work that well then I'm already looking for ways to modify it, or remove it. It's in my nature and has been that way...

    D&D 4E JamesonCourage's First 4e Session

My way of dealing with this is to determine from the player what their characters favorite type of weapon is, as an example. Then I make sure that when I use the random generator it covers that particular parcel. I don't spend a lot of time with this since inherent bonus is the method to close...

    Vor-Rukoth

I must make a correction in two places Vor-Rukoth was not Mike Mearls but Greg Bilsland though it does suffer from the "almost there" problem usually seen in Mearls' 4e work, which I think was the point MoutonRustique was trying to make. And you are correct it was Pyramid of Shadows, not...

    Vor-Rukoth

Being the lead designer is actually a good place for him to be. As long as you have a very good developer in the back end making sure the ideas are solid. My experience with Mearls is conflicted and quite bittersweet. His Iron Heroes rework of 3e had some inspired ideas that never got fully...

    Schrodinger's HP and Combat

Hit Points! To the last, I will grapple with thee... from Hell's heart, I stab at thee! For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee!

You ALMOST have some issues!!!! LOL

    Vor-Rukoth

I've used both Hammerfast and Vor-Rukoth as inspiration pieces for the setting. Each has enough in them to provide ideas for adventures. Which I believe is the real strength of each product. They are not adventures, they are not splatbooks, and they are not campaign settings per se. They...

    D&D 4E JamesonCourage's First 4e Session

I've used 3 methods for magic items. Treasure parcels that the players have given me an idea they wanted . These I level with the pcs. I create and modify magic items. And I use a random treasure generator. I use inherent bonus and I can keep the treasures interesting because I don't have to...

D&D 5E (2014) Light release schedule: More harm than good?

Isn't that the same as saying "I'm not a doctor but I play one on TV?" I'd rather have a real doctor and I'd rather have a real professional doing it. Not the guy on TV. I usually don't go see my dentist when my car needs a transmission. I'd rather have the mechanic take a look at it. He...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D in the news!

Well it looks like the ancient egyptians were already using the icosahedron way before 1980. Maybe it was not labeled 1-20, but the icosahedron did exist. http://www.cnet.com/news/ancient-d20-die-emerges-from-the-ashes-of-time/

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D in the news!

And that is why it stands out as a whacky quote. For all we know the interviewer thought that the d20 was something so unique to this type of game that they had to call it out specifically. That is the context that seems to make sense for this video. The video is an information piece to...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D in the news!

For people that are not into the type of games we play the d6 is probably the only dice they have any concept of, or have ever seen. The context of the quote in the video was definitely about the dice, not about a license.

D&D 5E (2014) 7 Legitimate Beefs with Hoard of the Dragon Queen

I'm on the player side of this adventure as I'm not DMing it. One of the things that annoyed our group was Beef #3: Dragon Eggs & Unclear Goals. I don't know if this is covered in the adventure or not. We decided to take the eggs rather than destroy them. There seemed to be no guidance on...

    D&D 3.x Flavourful Tweaks (3e/4e/PF especially)

Am I understanding correctly that you are mechanically creating the particular race you want using the mechanical trappings of any race you want? So I can create a elf that has an attack as a dragon breath mechanically instead of his normal attribute of elven accuracy, and I can flavor it as a...
