    [4th]Minotaur(MM) Fighter + Maul = overkill?

I've got a player using a Bugbear Fighter wielding a Maul as a bodyguard for his Tiefling Artificer in a single-player game. His average damage doesn't seem any higher than a Ranger using dual Bastard Swords against his quarry, and it hasn't been a problem in our game. There is no more level...

How often do you use the new templates?

The classed NPC ones are a bit tough to apply (as the powers aren't included in the block, so you have to do some page flipping) but I've found the basic ones a really great aid. So far I've used the Demagogue and Shadowborn templates, and will probably use a Bodyguard template in my next game.

Player's Choice: a web-app to help DM's cater to their player's gaming preferences.

I've been thinking a bit about presenting something similar to my players, but haven't gotten around to writing it out (and couldn't really put it in digital format well, either). I think a multiple choice quiz would work best for my purposes - when I've asked a few of my players what they'd...

    D&D 4E Guns in 4e

I'm not quite sure I follow your use of the Brutal property. You have 'Brutal 2' and 'Brutal 1' applied to 3d4 damage weapons, which will always do a minimum of 3 damage. Do you intend for the re-roll to apply to each individual d4? This becomes pretty extreme on the Blunderbuss - if 3s or...

My Game is Tomorrow Night; Help with Skill Challenge

Which is a shame, given that WotC have already produced a miniature for them ;).

D&D minis scale compared to other mini lines

The DDM scale varies a great deal from figure to figure in the line. Generally, the Privateer Press (Hordes, Warmachine) figures run towards the larger end, but don't look out of proportion next to DDM - I use both interchangeably in my games, on a 1inch grid. The one problem you might run into...

Stalker0's Obsidian Skill Challenge System (Update: Version 1.1) Now with PDF!!

Stalker, I've got more data points for you. I've used the Obsidian system in a campaign I've been running with three players, two of whom were completely new to roleplaying. I've run one skill challenge in each of the two sessions I've run. A few general comments: The system was incredibly...

    Templates: Must roles match?

On DMG Page 181, the Sidebar Monsters, Powers, and Attack Bonuses says to "Use the role provided by the class template, not the monster’s original role, when making this comparison." From this I can gather that it is assumed that you can use the templates on monsters of a different role.

    Miniatures, and other tableside accessories

I've never tried WotC's Dungeon tiles, but I get a lot of use out of Skeleton Key Games e-Adventure tiles printed onto heavy cardstock. The artwork is crisp, there are tiles for pretty much any environment you could want, and you can print as many of them as you like. The only downside is that...

    Minions: Known or Unknown?

Known. Aside from all the other reasons given (not wasting dailies, minions being present for cinematic reasons as a teeming horde, a desire not to feel like I am 'cheating' my PCs), the use of minions to speed up mass combat works both ways. Minions having going down in one hit doesn't just...

    What's your back-up game?

I'd probably just play Warmachine a lot.

DMing 24 hours after release! Am I nuts?

I think I DM'ed my first 3.5 game within 24 hours of buying the books, and I'd never roleplayed before at all. I'm sure your game will run smoothly, with the only problem perhaps being an occasional relapse into a 3.5ism.

'Dungeons & Dragons' fights for its future

That article grossly misrepresents the subscription data for D&D Online. According to VOIG D&D Online at max had 90,000 subscribers at launch, and has since dwindled to 20,000.

    Thievery Skill

I bet Sleight of Hand is split up - picking pockets is Thievery, but hiding a dagger in your sleeve is Stealth.

    Ampersand: Sneak Attack

I'd been thinking myself that firearms would be the first thing I'd have to house-rule into my 4e campaign... but the Rogue's proficiency with handcrossbows makes me think I might be better off simply declaring that crossbows are pistols, and bows are rifles, and not bothering with the mechanics...

Monte's 3.75? (A sequal is on its way)

I just finished reading the BOXM, and it was very enjoyable. I'm going to start using his spell system for the last three months of my 3.5 campaign (I've been using the Grace/HP rules and 1 feat/level variant since he mentioned them in his blog). When Monte says that the rules increase the...

    WotC_Rodney: Trap Fun!

I just noticed the packs of coloured sticker dots in the picture above. A few are stuck on some of the grid squares, that's a good way to track persistent effects! I'm not sure if that is all they're being used for, but they'd be great for tracking uses of per encounter and per day abilities as...

    D&D 4E [4E Encounters] Real Time?

Under 60 minutes isn't too bad, given the inexperience with the ruleset. Also, it seems individual encounters are a bit more important in 4e, so this seems more like it would mean an hour long "boss fight" rather than spending an hour to dispatch a few throw-away humanoids.
