    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8: Cantrips

People willingly take mind-altering drugs all the time. Booze and weed for fun, sleep aids, medicine prescribed by a therapist, herbal supplements to help with concentration, etc. These are all things that Enchantment school can do too in a positive manner. You're missing the point, perhaps...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8: Cantrips

I think that you're missing the fact that D&D is a violent game. Of course there's going to be a whole host of violent spells in every school (except Abjuration), because that's what the game revolves around. This is just a kind of selection bias - there's plenty of non-offensive potential in...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8: Cantrips

A bit late, but I'd like to take a moment and point out that Bless is an Enchantment school effect. If Bardic Inspiration was a spell, it'd also be Enchantment. Heroism. Sleep and Catnap have beneficial uses as a sleep aid. Zone of Truth has uses in a court room. Calm Emotion is drug-like...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

I'll tolerate almost anything but intolerance, or anything to do with harming kids or rape in my games. Those are my three lines when it comes to gaming or media. Having issues with fictional religions in the game can swing either way on the intolerance scale, so its kind of a case by case...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

Ish? If you flip your Patron the bird, you don't lose all your current abilities like a cleric or druid would, but Patrons are the ones that gives you new spells and abilities. Its equivalent to a wizard losing their spellbook- no way to learn new spells or trade them out, but you still have...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

And lets stop ignoring that there's plenty of clerics that don't use the mace in D&D anymore either. So....

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

I would like to suggest rechecking the original Final Fantasy. The original white mage used hammers and maces inspired from the D&D counterpart. The class evolved from there to be more of a robe-and-staff kind of person over time, but there's no denying its roots originated from the D&D...

    D&D 5E (2024) A Revised Necromancer Subclass?

Who said anything about problems or in the way of anything? I was making an observation that "dark magic" in D&D is kind of stuck in a rut. That there's not a lot of variety.

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

I find it amusing that the White Mage is offered as an alternative to the cleric.... when its literally based on the cleric. The original final fantasy classes are based on D&D, after all. The heavily armored cleric is a relic of early d&d, sure. But other than swapping out armor for...

    D&D 5E (2024) A Revised Necromancer Subclass?

The different necromancy subclasses all step on each others' toes all the time. 5e Necromancer stole the Fiend Warlock's THP generation (inferno warlock had it in 4e too, and was known as Fiendish Resistance in 3e), and the ability of evil clerics to Rebuke Undead. Shadow Sorcerer...

D&D 5E (2024) What creatures from existing sources besides MM, do you want to see updated for MM24?

The lack of commas in my writing has caused confusion, I see. Apologies. We've never had something called the Plane of Wood, but both feywild and plane of positive energy have been about rapid growth of plants as an aspect. Hense, the "plane of wood element" to fit real world elemental models.

D&D 5E (2024) What creatures from existing sources besides MM, do you want to see updated for MM24?

I've been thinking Feywild and Shadowfell are going to rejoin the Elemental Planes as the positive/negative planes, effectively making them the elemental planes of life/wood and rot we had pre-4e. Makes sense for druids-powered-by-inner-planes. YMMV

    D&D 5E (2024) A Revised Necromancer Subclass?

Wizards and subclasses - a bit of a deconstruction. So, there are six full casting classes. Three support (cleric, bard, druid) and three ... blasters? mages? (warlock, wizard, sorcerer). Lets go with mages. This contrasts with the martials split into three tanky classes and three skirmisher...

    D&D 5E (2024) Elves without racism [+]

Classes are important because they help create a more balanced game without the need for white tower, system-mastery based gaming. That creates a level of buy in and investments that you don't get with just looking over several feats. Classes grow with level, species do not. We already...

    D&D 5E (2024) Elves without racism [+]

Stupid idea but.... maybe that's not the worst thing to happen. I played a game of Fabula Ultima recently and it had no race selection. I could pick up a starting Quirk that let me have wings, mess around with resistances, be cursed, or start with an old, broken artifact. There's a couple...

D&D 5E (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

I don't like increasing HD on the monk. I'd prefer boosting their survivability through giving them AC and saving throw bumps. It just feels more monk-ish for them to dodge everything ("Remember, best block, no be there." -- Mr Miyagi) than to rely on their HP to soak hits.

D&D 5E (2024) Human Resourceful needs to be beefier − compare the Lucky feat

If you're going to bring up consensus, then I'm going to have to point out that the consensus on elf traits is, afaik, as follows: Trance - in games where DMs don't interrupt sleep and have wave it away, its worthless, but it very much DOES have a use in games where rests are more by the book...

D&D 5E (2024) Human Resourceful needs to be beefier − compare the Lucky feat

Uhhh.... ? What? We've seen them since the UA Expert playtest... While you're correct that quality matters, the elf traits are all relatively high in quality. Yes, that includes Trance. Certainly, I wouldn't put the same value you do. Which is another reason why this "three feat" thing...

D&D 5E (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

I'm of the opinion that Step of the Wind, Flurry of Blows and Patient Defense should all use ki. I am also of the opinion that ONLY these three things should use ki. Everything else should either be free, or be improving those three features without increasing cost. I am also of the...
