According to the article, the Midgard world information is contained in a separate book, not in their DMG (with a convenient link to buy it for just $50). Which I'm sure is an approach that WotC could've followed without anyone accusing them of spreading out content in order to milk more money...

Who cares about teleporting people into falling damage? That might come up once in a campaign, if ever. The ability is amazing because it enables you to actually hold aggro as a tank, something every other subclass in the game lacks.

Seems pretty obvious that they want this to work with Ranged weapons, but that they felt like letting brute strength somehow enable you to quickly shoot a second target was a bridge too far so they left the Melee requirement in for Hew. I'm not sure what you mean by "double sub-optimal"...
