    Underrated RPGs

Oh, man! Now there's a name I haven't heard for a long time! I was/am a huge fan of Marquee Press's games, but Khaotic was the absolute best; a truly original game premise that, when combined with the house system's mechanics, was decades ahead of its time.

Trying to remember the name of a RPG.

My memory fails me. I remember that the game in question came in two volumes (a core rulebook and a campaign setting). It was definitely science fiction with heavy fantasy elements. I believe that the game in question was licensed under the OGL. I'm somewhat less certain on this point, but seem...

D&D General Recommend me a somewhat contained setting

The Chronicles of Amherth by Small Niche Games and its three companion volumes (Guidebook to the City of Dolmvay, Guidebook to the Duchy of Valnwall, and Ghoul Keep and the Ghoul Lands). It was originally written for Labyrinth Lord, but is pretty easy to convert for 5e.

    Underrated RPGs

MechWarrior Destiny is amazing. It's the full-on, total package, MechWarrior RPG that I've wanted for decades and that all of the other MechWarrior RPGs failed to deliver for various reasons (but mostly the whole "You want to play out mecha batttles? Then break out the Battletech wargame!" bit).

    Underrated RPGs

No, RuneScape Kingdoms (the RPG, not the boardgame of the same name) is a bespoke system based on the RuneScape MMORPG. It's a beautiful book and, currently, can be had at many online purveyors of fine RPGs for roughly half off the MSRP (so $20-ish dollars).

    Underrated RPGs

I'm currently very smitten with Cairn 2e, Ruincairn Wardensaga, and RuneScape Kingdoms.

    Underrated RPGs

My only critique of Dragonslayer so far is that some rules (notably Ability Checks) are mentioned in the glossary, but the procedure for them is never properly discussed elsewhere in the game (e.g. when to use them, how to use them, other GM guidance, etc). This kind of bad content editing is a...

D&D General Poll: Did you watch the D&D cartoon when it was new?

Yes, though not religiously. My main watches were The Herculoids and Thundarr the Barbarian.

Presentation and Rules Are Different Things

Oh, Jesus, YES. For me, the Bubblegum Crisis core book was the worst offender. I'm sure it is probably a great game, but I'll never know because I can't get past the absolutely atrocious layout and graphic design. It is terrible.

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

I'm not throwing it away because of Hasbro. I'm throwing it away because it doesn't spark joy (any longer). Specifically, I've played so much 5e to the exclusion of all other games until last year, that I think I've had my fill of it for life. I'm ready to play ANYTHING else.

The Most Creative TTRPG Settings and Milieus

I used a few sourcebooks, but I ran a pretty lengthy Rifts campaign just in the American west.

Anyone tried the Salvage Union RPG?

I haven't even heard of this before! BUT, I am a huge fan of Quest and of mecha RPGs in general, so this looks very cool.

The Most Creative TTRPG Settings and Milieus

Arduin, in its many iterations, captures the "rule of cool" aesthetic when it comes to world building. If something sounded/looked cool, the various stewards of Arduin (starting with Dave Hargrave), plunked it down in the setting/rules. Sometimes this results in a wildly incongruous setting and...

    D&D General Best dungeons?

Eyes of the Stone Thief is the best mega-dungeon that I've ever had the pleasure to play through. There is a 5e conversion manual, but I've only played the original 13th Age version. Stonehell comes in at #2, but I ran it using Warlock (the Caltech OD&D variant), which is not the system it was...

D&D General Your Character Died! Who's Fault Was It?

Most often, Fate (the dice). I don't build characters to game the system and I play them as if they were actual living, breathing, folk (I often even build intentionally flawed characters, because people are flawed). So I usually don't blame the DM or myself. I let situations play out as Fate...

What are you reading in 2025?

Cairn 2e (Player's and Warden's guides), RuneScape Kingdoms core rulebook, Dragonslayer core rulebook).

    What are your go-to dice?

For years my go-to dice were a set of "poison yellow" Koplow dice that I bought back in 1995 or 1996. They were butt ugly and had no collectible value to speak of, but they were easy to read. I lost them in a move a few years ago.

    Dragonbane general thread

I've snapped up everything available in PDF except, I think, the campaign. I dearly want to play this but most of my current play group is violently opposed to trying new things. I think maybe two of them can be persuaded to try Dragonbane.
