This is only a few paths off from forming the basis for a Cthulhu Mythos story or Dario Argento giallo.

It's not quite a roleplaying game, but there's an old wargame by FGU called Archworld that comes very close. If you can find it cheap, it's worth a look (I've considered adapting it into a roleplaying game ala OD&D many times).

I came back to D&D with 5e after a long lapse (I only played a bit of 3x and no 4e). That said, I'm ready to move on from 5e. I've been playing Vampire and Werewolf this year and having a blast. I plan to run some Barrowmaze next year using an OSR system.

Person of Interest had a very good ending.
