Will trying to maintain legacy and the "feel" of D&D hurt innovation?

I spent about $400 on newly published gaming material, last year. The products were all compatible with 1e, which I'm currently running. They were published by outfits like LotFP, FGG, and about half a dozen others. But, not WotC. I'm hardly the only "old schooler" who's buying new gaming...

What is the feel of D&D anyway?

It's not "nostalgia." I still run 1e. It feels free-wheeling and the action is rather fierce. :)

    Is random good?

Randomness allows me, as a DM, to be surprised, challenged and enhances my overall enjoyment of running a game. Abulafia has some good ones.

Adventurer Conqueror King as a preview of D&D Next?

The OSR isn't nearly as subject to "fracturing," as other markets. People buy the games that interest them and are as likely to hack ACKS into their homebrew system as run it straight. Most OSR gamers I know own several clones, have their favorite(s) but play with more than one. And the old saw...

Need a good name for a band of orcs

The Random Heavy Metal Album Generator can give you some good "hits," for this sort of thing. Heavy Metal Name Generator - Album, Song, and Band Names Also, dungeon levels or areas, cults, etc. Here's a sample: Oblique Dragon: Tool Of The Adversary Absolve My Hope ...and Sadness Reigns...

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

Not I! "Here's the Campaign World. Now, Go And Destroy It!" Ultimately, I'm creating the playground of the Milieu, for the Player's to Play in. It's theirs! I'm giving it to them. They can destroy it, remake it, whatever they want. Or, can. They're creating their story, not mine. It's...

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

I'd better make something else clear. I never have an interest in derailing the PC's plans. Those Random Events I mentioned might do so on occasion, though that's actually fairly rare. And players are determined little buggers! :) Events I determine randomly, whether local, or effecting a much...

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

In my games the world does continue turning, apart from the PC's. While they're busy messing with that Thieves Guild I mentioned above, they might totally ignore the rumor that the Evil Magician Buttmunch is rounding up an army of orcs. Months down the road, they may hear that Buttmunch's...

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

Yes. The player's are free to ignore any adventure hook. Period. Adventure hooks are always being provided and generated. The party can create their own "hook." (Like, "Let's rob a bank!") Once things get going, their actions and the results of those actions will produce opportunities...

The Return of the Player and the Man Beneath the Mask?

I don't get it either. I grew up playing AD&D with friends. We had a lot of fun and had no problems grokking how to play the game.

    D&D 5E (2014) Another Critical Hits 5E Report

And in 1e, an Ogre would be a very tough opponent for a 1st level party. It could easily play out the same way. A 1e MU's Sleep spell would have a 50% of effecting an Ogre.

What's your favorite edition of D&D (so far)?

Yeah, nostalgia doesn't really apply, to something I've been actually doing for almost 30 years.

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

4e players have every right to be bothered by this. And every reason not to want to play a game just because "it's new." If the community as a whole has learned anything, it's that we don't have to move on, just because WotC wants us to.

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

Most old school DM's today, have had 25+ years to figure out how to handle this sort of thing. I was ok at it when I was 14. I'm 43 now. I've had a lot of practice. Not to mention, hashing and re-hashing Ruling ideas in the OSR blogosphere, over the past 3 years. Now, when I was 14 and wasn't...

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

That's because everyone is pretty much happy with their edition. WotC is the only party who isn't happy. They should really, really take note of that.

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

Any decent DM would give you an idea of what your chances were. I'd tell you how I was going to adjudicate it, as well. And if you had an idea for a better mechanic, I'd listen. We're back to reasonableness. :)
