D&D 5E (2014) Best DUNGEON modules, any edition, to convert to 5th?

There are a few recommendations I've already looked at, which is great! Means we're on the same page (I am referring to Crypt of Istaris and Chadranthar's Bane). My personal favourites so far (I don't have issue numbers on me, I'm afraid): * "Keep for Sale". First level PCs clear a...

D&D 5E (2014) How to make an awesome Underdark encounter table in 5e?

The latter. Specific NPCs that the characters can interact with throughout the campaign. It's always worked well with me... in my Dark Sun merchant game, a lot of rolls of "merchant" tended to lead to the same three or four specific merchants. Good times.

D&D 5E (2014) Best DUNGEON modules, any edition, to convert to 5th?

So, I run a campaign that is mostly centred around old modules from Dungeon magazine. We're about to end our current adventure, and head into Dwellers of the Forbidden City, but after that, it's open territory. I was wondering if anybody had recommendations for good adventures from Dungeon...

    D&D 5E (2014) Character Options

Well, we're currently playing "feats only". I like feats, but I think next game, I'm going to play without them. As for multi-classing, we decided after a long look to get rid of them, and only one player is put-off by this decision... and he still absolutely understands why I made it. I'd...

D&D 5E (2014) How to make an awesome Underdark encounter table in 5e?

I've been using wandering monster tables a lot in my 5th campaign. What I've come to realize, is that while it might be cool to have very specific type encounters, you're better off having your table be such that you can roll the same encounter multiple times, and not necessarily have your...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Mearls' Comments on Fighter Subclasses Lacking Identity

Yeah, I can get that. No arguments here. Well, my favourite game is the d6 System, which is pretty class-less. And my favourite way to play D&D is with the generic classes system, so yeah, there's that. Until I decide that 5e is complete awesome, BECMI is my favourite edition. So, yeah...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Mearls' Comments on Fighter Subclasses Lacking Identity

You're very fun to disagree with. :) Never said it was. Just came to mind as I was typing. And I think it kind of stands, but whatever. What I mean is, when people look at the rogue class throughout D&D history, they point out fictional characters first. When people talk about fighters...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Mearls' Comments on Fighter Subclasses Lacking Identity

Ha, most of them? It works perfectly fine if you figure healing wounds is really just inherent toughness and not actually, you know, "healing". As for the hits and all that in plate - I dunno, I've seen some pretty crazy things people are capable of doing. We have a guy in Victoria who...

D&D 5E (2014) What would a current "Knight" class look like?

If we're looking a the subject as a knight class, I'd actually prefer something like "mounted warrior". The fact is, knighthood is pretty limited in what it represents, and a class, as defined in D&D, should be much more broad But a mounted warrior would represent roman equites, persian...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Mearls' Comments on Fighter Subclasses Lacking Identity

I knew rogues were going to come up when I mentioned this. :) HOWEVER... they don't really exist, not as presented in D&D. Indiana Jones, master thieves, super spies... they're as much fantasy as, say, Gandalf.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Mearls' Comments on Fighter Subclasses Lacking Identity

To put it briefly - fighters can exist in the real world. And when that happens, you can either go crazy trying to have a huge subset of rules to cater to every variation of reality (see Pathfinder), or you can just settle for a super broad write-up, and leave the fine-tuning for others. We...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help me escape from a grapple!

Sure, and for the most part, I'd agree with that thinking. However, I'm of the mind that unintelligent creatures will probably use their most mathematically superior ability in their statblock... simply because evolution or whatever has given that to them. As I said with Gators - they will do...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help me escape from a grapple!

If there's a party there that's hitting the thing, why make it worse? The whole reason people are worried about this combo is in a one on one. Once the otyugh's got you, it'll kill you unless you've got friends to help you out. If you've got friends to help you out, this monster doesn't...

D&D 5E (2014) Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide: Player Content Guesses

Personally, I hope the book has a bit of new stuff. I loved the spells in PotA, for example... it was my favourite part of the book (my girlfriend loves the genasi). Just speculating, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some FR-specific stuff in there. Spellplague stuff, if that's still...

D&D 5E (2014) Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide: Player Content Guesses

I believe it goes something like this (going from AL notes, mostly) Rank 1: Nothing. Rank 2: You get a patron who gives you secret quests and whatnot. Rank 3: You get a new downtime activity. Plus you get some sort of perk that's fairly mild. Rank 4: You get a role within the...

D&D 5E (2014) Help me populate my world with Monsters

I'm a fan of the twist. So, forest setting. PCs hear that during a full moon, a bunch of wolves are mauling peasants. They get to the village, do a bit of investigating, and encounter rabid wolves. Naturally, they assume werewolves. Turns out, no, it's actually a vampire that can control...

Unearthed Arcana Crawford On Lots Of Stuff! Release Tempo, Video Games, OGL, Conventions, Unearthed Arcana, 2018, Tia

Hm. Regarding the multiverse issue which seems to be the crux of this discussion: As a general rule, it's been a part of D&D for a long time. I think it really got ramped up around the time that RIFTS hit the market, and showed what a strong multiverse would do. For TSR, it meant that a...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Missing Equipment

Don't add weapons to the list, but add variants to them. For example, cultural variations on swords, axes, etc. Like they've done with the asian weapons. If you add exotic weapons, do as Kobold Stew already mentioned. That works, and I think it's a good course of action. But I'd avoid...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeon Obstacles

At its heart, an obstacle is anything that causes the players to stop and debate courses of action. When they have to put on their problem-solving hats, you're set. Puzzles are a classic example. But so are a bunch of fungus that may or not be dangerous blocking the way. So is a submerged...
