    D&D 4E 4E Liker - anything you worry about?

I don't know what to say; it simply IS easier, and I've seen it work in my 4e preview game. "Until save" effects aren't that common, so most of your effects end up being end-of-turn things, and once you get used to the "roll a save" step of your turn, you don't really forget that sort of thing...

    D&D 4E 4E Liker - anything you worry about?

Because "one turn" or "encounter" are easier to follow than "6 rounds" and "oh yeah, I forgot to turn the counter die". The point is to make most powers one round, where it's on, and then it's off, and no questions. Ah... I'm at a loss. I don't see dungeonpunk here. Normally dungeonpunk has a...

    D&D 4E 4E Liker - anything you worry about?

I can almost guarantee that the new races will be much more useful than the half-orc, and if they ever provide a player race half-orc, he'll be more useful than the 3.x half-orc too. It's already significant work to make a decent new class. It's making a lousy one that's easy. (This isn't a...

    Pronounciation of Justiciar

Your personal opinions don't have any bearing on the correct pronunciation of the species name. Tief is german for "low" or "deep", and -ling is a diminiuative. So "tief-ling" would roughly mean "little low one" or "little deep one" (in the sense of underground, not philosophically deep), or...

    Pronounciation of Justiciar

Actually, that's kind of strange... I live in Texas, around Dallas, so we get lots of east-texas drawl around here, but I've never heard anyone drop the G from Halfling or Tiefling (tee-fling). Seriously. You'll hear about a halfling goin' runnin' and swimmin'.

    Nice Balrog!

Um... is that a joke or something? He has a left hand and a right hand just like he's supposed to. They're just on the ends of the wrong arms, because that's how Rakshasas have always been (since Indian mythology, I think). In fact, I recall that when they were making the Rakshasa minis, they...

    Pronounciation of Justiciar

I had a player who did that. Also "melee" with the accent on the first syllable, "muh-LEE". When I was 7 or 8, I suddenly found out that the written word "ceramic" and the spoken word were the same word. For some reason I'd been mentally reversing the E and the R, and thinking "creamic"...

    Is "Justiciar" the new "Rogue?"

The traditional pronunciation has the accent on the second syllable, "ju-STI-shee-ar", but I'd probably be fine with scootching the accent back to the first, to match with the modern pronunciation of "justice" -- "JUS-ti-shar". At least it sounds better than just-a-car. (It's reinterpreting...

    Pronounciation of Justiciar

I was surprised by this thread. I'd always mentally skipped the second I, as far back as Complete Warrior. Color me shocked! I'm normally good about pronunciation. The traditional pronunciation has the accent on the second syllable, "ju-STI-shee-ar", but I'd probably be fine with scootching...

    D&D 4E 4E Liker - anything you worry about?

Dumping CON would seem to be a bad plan on its face, but I see your point. It may depend on how the skills are allotted. In general, though, I suspect we'll see mostly characters that are pretty close to the Elite Array -- 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15. That's a good distribution of scores without...

    D&D 4E 4E Liker - anything you worry about?

I actually disagree with that fear. That is to say -- assuming a new player starts out at level 1, you really have only five things to keep track of (two at-will powers, two encounter, and one daily), and a brand new fighter can easily have that many combat options -- it's just that they're...

Will CON become a dump stat?

Here's what I know of that Con does so far: - Add Con score (not modifier!) to base HP. A character with 14 Con has four HP more than a character with 10 Con. - Extra healing surges equal to con modifier. A character with 14 Con has two more Surges than a character with 10 Con. - Add the...

    Dodging arrows

Huh? Of course it's possible in 3e. A level 1 rogue with no armor ALWAYS has a better Reflex than AC (which is equal to his touch AC). Well, a better reflex bonus than AC bonus -- AC adds 10, reflex adds d20, but that averages to just about the same thing. Right, exactly. No big deal...

    Dodging arrows

One is awkward, the other stupid. It'd be ridiculous to have a system such that a wrapped-in-steel pally is easy to peg with arrows... that's what the armor and shield are FOR. Honestly, I'm not saying I demand a fix or anything. I just was wondering if anyone else thought that might be a...

    Dodging arrows

It was the Slinger I noticed -- as I said in the original post, I was running some 1st level dudes against a few bunches of kobolds and human highwaymen. Right, that was my original point. It's not me asking what AC represents, but rather -- if you can dodge a bolt of magical force, why is...

D&D 4E Two Questions for the 4e Designers

I dunno, it seems like a kind of obvious idea that if all the classes need to be balanced, then they should use similar mechanics.

    Dodging arrows

The other night, my group played a little preview 4e game, with the players using the DDXP pregens and me running the monsters I had data for (mostly kobolds and some human guards and bandits). I noticed something weird -- some monsters have a Reflex higher than their AC. How does that work...

D&D 4E Two Questions for the 4e Designers

Yeah, and when you do have a real difference in level -- like sorcs getting a one-level slower progression -- it doesn't feel "different", it just feels like you're getting kicked for no good reason. It's a big penalty for no reason more complicated than you chose limited spell selection over...

D&D 4E Two Questions for the 4e Designers

Not really. I, for one, said, "Oh, that makes sense." Elves have been schizophrenic for a long time ("Are we serious shiny magic people or chaotic forest stalkers? I'm confused.") and splitting their two halves into to different races was a pretty obvious step. FR did it a long time ago...

D&D 4E Two Questions for the 4e Designers

Thanks for the response! I was kind of doubtful I'd get any sort of dev response, but -- woo! You're right, not quite what I was expecting -- but a fascinating answer none the less. It sounds to me like you're right, that they're pretty darn good, if you can't remember what was the old idea...
