A few pages from the Player's Guide

That's a shame as I and at least half of the group I game with have read the novel. (and for myself several times -- it is one of the few books that I enjoy rereading). Am I to assume then, that the adventure path will, at least to some degree, follow the story of the novel? Will the...

    Learning something new... But what?

there have been ots of good suggestions so far and I would like to offer a couple more. As far as a musicl instrument you might want to try the Harmonica ---inexpensive (or at least it can be), lots of self learning books and portable. As far as physical activity I would like to recommend...

    RPG music

check out a group called Two Steps from Hell. The do a lot of music for movie trailers. They have an album called Invincible and it is available on I-Tunes. They also have a webpage Untitled Document Also I know you weren't looking for anything that had pre-associations but you might want to...

    How did you get started?

As far as reading and the first books I bought for myself it was probably the Hardy Boys - not really a stepping stone to SciFi/Fantasy -- that came later. I suppose the first SciFi I really read was Star Trek (the James Blish stories based on the original series episodes). As far as the...

Owning multiple copies of RPG books

I have generally owned a couple of copies of the PHB for all the editions but other than that not intentionally. That being said, I will sometimes by something I am iffy about as a PDF and then if I decide to actually run it buy the book.

Grimm or Once Upon a Time

I enjoyed Once Upon a Time more than Grimm but at this point I am willing to give both shows a few more episodes. Once Upon a Time just seemed to have a more interesting overall storyline. If Grimm turns into the "bad of the week" I will probably jettison it.

Ever had a demon/devil/god show up by its name being spoken?

If I remember correctly in the old Dieties and Demigods there was a bit under Hastur where if his name was spoken three times there was a 10% chance a 10HD minion showed up and if you survived that there was a 10% chance the big boy himself showed. I played in a a campaign where one of the...

Does Anyone Know if This Kind of Game Exists...

If you mean is there a D & D wargame - then yes. There was Dragonlance Module 11 from the original Dragonlance modules. There was also a boxed set published for Greyhawk that played out the Greyhawk Wars. I played the Dragonlance game once and seem to remember it being okay but to be honest...

Ability scores - How intrinsic are they to D&D?

Not sure how easy it is to get ahold of anymore but there was a game (still one of my favourites) called Powers and Perils by Avalon Hill which I think would give you a great deal of what you seem to want. Attributes and skills improve over time as you use them (and only if you use them)...

Would you rat out a friend who killed a bad guy?

Exactly --- there is only one way to be sure a secret is kept --- tell no one. Speaking hypothetically on a forum of any kind is going to come back to bite you in the butt should such a situation arise.

To Fudge or not to Fudge...

Hi ..... my name is Bill and I am a die fudger. (that sounds much worse than it is) As a player I do not fudge. Never have and never will. As a DM I do fudge. As a DM I use a screen -- always and I have never playedin a campaign where the DM didn't. Occassionaly it is because I put together...

    [October] What are you reading?

I am just finishing a re-read of Summer Knight (Dresden) and am about to move on to Out of the Dark by David Weber. Following that I will hopefully get a copy of The Tears of the Sun by S.M. Stirling and dive into that. As far as non-fiction is concerned I am reading How the Scots Invented the...

    D&D, Technology, and Planned Obsolescence

agreed -- completely! If the next edition of D & D is entirely digital I am out and I say this as someone who buys pretty much everything they put out that could be considered "core" (I don't buy every setting, very few modules and absolutely no "strategy guides"). Personally I am still...

New Monte Cook article Magic and Mystery

Apologies for taking this thread a bit off topic. Two points 1/ I have DMed a lot and I don't believe that a DM should only stage encounters that are an appropriate level to the group. Sometimes the party should kick some butt and sometimes they should get their butt kicked (or at the very...

New Monte Cook article Magic and Mystery

While I personally love Fantasy RPGs that have very few (if any) magic items that is not what I play D & D for. An abundance of magic items is as much D & D as the six attributes, levels or anything else you care to throw out there as an example of what D & D is at its core. Virtually every...

    Dorsai

I was just posting on another thread regarding books worth rereading and had googled Gordon R. Dickson (one of my favourite authors) and found an article regarding a made for TV version of his book Dorsai. This was the first I had heard of it and infortunately the article is over a year old...

nice list --- just want to echo the support for the Foundation Trilogy and Dune -- I forgot about those and have read both several times -- esp Dune.

    Enjoying older stories

books or authors that I never seem to get tired of rereading 1/ Tolkien (LoTR --- although often only parts) 2/ Weber and White -- Starfire Series (although most of Webers stuff works for me) 3/ David Gemmell -- almost anything but in particular "Legend" and "Morningstar" 4/ Orson Scott...
