Poll: What is the highest level you've ever gamed to?

First of all it is very cool to read about everyone elses experiences. Thanks to Traveon for starting it. In my 35 or so years of gaming 15th is the highest level I have ever played. To be fair though that was 1E and I was an Assassin and that was level cap. I ran with a few characters who...

How do you make up Fantasy names?

For characters I just mess around with sounds in my head until I have something that works for the particular character. Dwarves tend to have harder sounding names than elves and so on. I then say the name out loud for a while and try to twist the name (for humours sake) and then decide if I...

D&D 4E Poll for 4e DMs: Alignment System

I use the alignment system from 4E but only as a guideline. I have never been a fan of alignment and have always prefered (both as a player and a DM) to let the actions of the character determine the reaction of the world around them rather than the fact that the player is of a particular...

    Are "Pretty" Dungeons Better?

For myself, both as a player and a GM, I like my dungeons to be as realistic as is reasonable possible. I like there to be a reason that things are where they are. I'm not usually too worried about the engineering involved, although if I think a bridge, for example, is too flimsy to walk...

How fast do your PCs level up?

Smart ass answer -- One level at a time. Serious answer -- I can't speak to how long it takes for higher levels as after 35 years of gaming I have never made it past 15th level nor have I ever DMed for anything higher than that. However as it stands in a 4E campaign we take 3 or 4 sessions to...

I Need some Big-Time help (Issue: Alignment, DM, PCs)

Suppressing yourself so that someone else can be a star is not helping either of you. There is a poem by Marianne Williamson that says it more clearly than I. It is called "Our Deepest Fear" Below is an exerpt. ...... Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened...

    Worse. Character. Name. Ever!!

I once (when much, much, much younger) played a dwarven fighter/theif, as did by best friend. We were named Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. I played in a campain where the Big Bad Guy was named Ted the Mean Guy -- we did come to fear it. As a GM I have seen characters with some hideous names...

I Need some Big-Time help (Issue: Alignment, DM, PCs)

Jawdropping...... absolutely jawdropping I think the problems here are considerably bigger than alignment issues. This group is redefining disfunctional. If you want to save this game and/or friendships you need to get everyone together (probably at some neutral site) and discuss the issues...

D&D 4E Classic items that never made it to 4E

I must admit the Wand of Wonder brings back fond DMing memories. There was one player in particular who just loved to get his hands on a Wand of Wonder and it was virtually guaranteed that chaos ensued. The same player in the same situation when I was a player though, now that was the stuff...

    Fantasy Book suggestions

I'll second the "A Canticle for Leibowitz" and I might just have to and grab it out of the book shelf and read it again --- it's been a while. I first read it as required reading for a university course --- Anthropology Through Science Fiction ---- wow that was a while ago. I would also second...

Take a stand! LotR vs. GoT

Lord of the Rings -- absolutely --no doubt whatsoever. Lord of the Rings, as has been said before, was my first and it is the one I go back to. I will find books that have one aspect or another that beats Lord of the Rings but very rarely do I find a book (or series) that I like more and Game...

    Fantasy Book suggestions

As Umbran stated not too sure what might qualify as boring but I'm willing to give it a shot. If you like the sort of traditional heroic fantasy I would suggest anything by David Gemmell. He wrote a fair number of books and while he doesn't usually write series as such, many of his books...

Sell the fluff, pimp the crunch

From Legends and Lore column (by Mike Mearls) on the WOTC website (dated 8/9/2011) "Earlier this year, we launched a set of weekly columns (including this one) to reach out to the D&D player community and to give you all a greater voice. Our approach to the skirmish game mirrors that goal, and...

Sell the fluff, pimp the crunch

Thanks for the answer ...I must admit to have stopped frequenting the WOTC forums some time ago. I may have to begin more agressive lurking. I am relieved to hear that WOTC has begun to make playtesting a bigger part of the process. I suppose time will tell how effective the new plan is.

    Proposed: Adopt a "normal" person

This thread segues very nicely into a question that I have been thinking about for a rather long time. Do the majority of gamers tell everyone about their hobby or does it "stay in the closet"? Now I am not trying to imply that if you don't wear gamer shirts or have bumper stickers...

Sell the fluff, pimp the crunch

There has been a great deal of talk about WOTC and their playtesting and its effectiveness. I have a question --- has anyone here ever been involved in playtesting for WOTC? Does anyone know anyone who has been involved in playtesting for WOTC? I am specifically interested in out of house...
