Forked Thread: Why Ravenloft and 4E May Not Mesh

Over my many years of DM'ing I've heard this quite a bit. Sometimes it's legit, but more often than not it's just an excuse from a player who refuses to voluntarily allow something bad to happen to their character. It's very easy to be a 21st player whose character looks at a horde of rampaging...

    Official Symbol for Law?

Is there an official D&D symbol for Law? In the Age of Worms campaign it refers to the symbol as an arrow. I'm looking for a picture but is the arrow the official symbol of Law or is there another?

    Damaging Items Cheat Sheet

I've whipped up the attached for my home game. It's a cheat sheet for damaging items, magical or otherwise. Enjoy!

    Sneak Attacking When Concealed?

Ahhh, that clarifies things. Yes, the text says the creature is hidden within an object and the PCs can't see it.

    Sneak Attacking When Concealed?

I was reading one of the Age of Worms adventures and there's a monster with sneak attack who has concealment from the PCs. The adventure says it can make sneak attacks since it has concealment from them. That got me thinking, because I don't recall sneak attack working that way. From the SRD...

Do energy weapons stay "on" when not held?

We're going to house rule that a free action turns them on and off, and they turn off automatically after every encounter. If players complain, they'll be held to the command word (standard action) activation. Which is a pain.

    Anyone using Onenote?

I have recently installed OneNote and I was playing around with it and find it to be quite promising. I noticed that it auto-saves and you don't actually have to manually save like you do with other Office documents. If I want to use OneNote on multiple computers (that have OneNote installed)...

    Wall of Fire and Movement

We say you only take damage from a wall of fire once per round. Simplifies things greatly.

Will the WOTC Gametable return or is it dead forever?

I was never keen on 4E. I told myself I'd wait a year and by then the virtual tabletop would be up and running. That's what interested me. I'd be able to run regular D&D games with players around the world whenever I wanted, via an official D&D medium no less. Today, nothing about 4E impresses...

    Spell Area of Effect?

Is that spelled out somewhere? So what does Shapeable (S) mean?

    Spell Area of Effect?

If a spell has an Area of one 10-ft. square/level and that's all it says (i.e., no burst/emanation/shapeable, etc. descriptor), can the caster place them wherever he wants or do they spread out evenly from the designated intersection?

    He's not. There's a die roll. ;)

    Spells to improve touch AC

Better to focus on miss chance, like a Displacement spell (50% miss). Not only does that dramatically reduce your odds of being hit by both regular and touch attacks, but it also negates sneak attacks.

    Greedy Players? No Roleplaying?

The whole loot and kill thing is nothing new but is becoming more commonplace with the popularity of games like Diablo and World of Warcraft. It shouldn't come as a surprise that players familiar with those games want to import the "loot and sell" aspects to D&D. If you're okay with that, no...

need help with permanent detect magic

I'd definitely make him (and the party) pay for it. They'll be taking 3-4 times as long to run through a dungeon. I'd have monsters start mustering their forces and assaulting the party in waves. Basically, yeah, if you let the player get away with this cheesy metagaming tactic, then it'll...

concealed vs. secret doors and detect secret doors spell

Sounds like a needless mechanic just to get to the detect spell. I'd just allow the spell to detect it. It's silly that the wizard's magic can find a specially constructed secret door but it can't find a door behind a shower curtain.
