D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

20 hp in that example would be the amount of 1 solid hit of the slayer, so the fight ends earlier. My reaper feat would give the slayer an advantage on the attack on the weakened dragon. Everyone could kill the 5 hp dragon, yes - but a 5 hp dragon could still dodge all other attacks. The slayer...

    How to classify monster strength?

Why is it a waste of time to give a noob DM advice on what challenge is okay and what kind of challenge is surely too much for a noob group of players/characters? Just because a DM does not adjust the difficulty settings for his game when his players are experienced and can beat the game on...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

I was comparing the effects of 'my' reaper feat to the effects of the reaper feat as written. -YRUSirius

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Yeah, but do 3 automatic points of damage every round really help... that much more to widdle down a dragon? We look at 30 hit points in 10 rounds. The reaper feat seems to be a minion killer (1-5 hp), this seems to be its intent. Against stronger enemies with medium hp (10-50) it helps to...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Hm, good point. But after a few sessions every wizard would intuitively know what kind of monsters get affected by his hp threshold spells anyways (kobold and goblins yes - orcs no). No reaper feat needed. And if a wizard with my reaper feat uses an action to shoot to see if he get's advantage...

    How to classify monster strength?

Okay, let's try to rephrase the question then. How many monsters (in xp) are too much for a level 1 group of 4 adventurers (TPK). Because I'd want to try to avoid unfair TPKs. :) -YRUSirius

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Repost from another thread: I propose a new Reaper feat to all those who hate automatic damage for melee combatants (hey, wizards always were able to get some kind of automatic damage!): Reaper: You gain advantage on attack rolls against creatures with 5 or less hit points. I think this...

How do you feel about Dex in the first playtest?

Dex fighters don't get the high damage dice from big two-handed strength weapons so this might be their opportunity cost. Increase the AC of heavy armor by +1 so strength fighters can stay in the same AC range as the high dex fighters. I don't see any other problems with the Dex stat. Finesse...

Another possible change for another iteration: The shield spell could grant disadvantage to incoming attacks instead of half cover (AC +2). It also could be cast as a reaction, if an opponent attacks the wizard. Stylewise this would use similiar mechanics as the guardian's defender feature or...

    How to classify monster strength?

The monsters in the D&D Next bestiary document have xp values. Has anyone calculated or playtested what amount of monsters of what xp values are 'appropriate' for a given 4 party adventuring group of a given level? Say 4 goblins (400 xp) are an 'appropriate' challenge for a party of 4...

    Alternatives to At-Will Magic

I kinda like 5E's at-will minor spells (and that magic missile is an at-will). They just need their damage output adjusted a bit. Make their damage dice one category smaller so Radiant Lance does 1d6+Wis instead of 1d8+Wis damage, Shocking Grasp does 1d6+Int instead of 1d8+Int. A cleric with a...

D&D 5E (2014) How should combat maneuvers be handled in Next?

I like what I'm reading. I'm coming to the conclusion that currently D&D Next has ALL the rulings needed to handle combat maneuvers. Everyone can improvise actions. Combat maneuvers fall into that category. Say you want to trip someone: Because you're attacking an armed enemy with your weapon...

Something that could help DMs with this "Players roll all dice" house-rule is changing the attribute score range: Instead of attributes ranging from 1-20 max, have attributes scores start at 5 and max at 15, while every point above or below the average attribute score of 10 gives a bonus or...

    Bounded Accuracy L&L

Hm, a group of 25 goblins could be split up to groups of 5 and every group would attack one PC. So for every group of 5 kobolds that attack you throw 5d20 for the attack, you count how many attacks hit and throw damage dice accordingly. I'm inclined to handle this differently though. Don't make...

    Playtest House Rules/Revision Suggestions

This could be a nice rule module. It might be something unusual for traditional DMs but it's great for lazy DMs. Additionally it makes characters with high AC (fighters, clerics) feel very accomplished if they are able to actively defend 6 attacks of 6 pesky kobolds. The fight might not be as...
