    D&D 5E (2014) A Thought about 5e Multi-classing...

Sounds a bit like the 5E class themes. :) Atleast the kit part. -YRUSirius

    D&D 5E (2014) A Thought about 5e Multi-classing...

Front-loaded class: Most if not all important class features at level 1. Might get cheesy in 3E if you dip in 5 different classes at level 5. The editions before didn't have 'problems' with multiclassing frontloaded classes, because there was a limit on how many classes you can dip into (3 at...

    Falling from Great Heights

If you fall in lava you die. If you fall more than 50 meters/75 feet you die. Okay? -YRUSirius

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next weekly art column!

I just want to quickly go back to cover art, here's my kind of cover art I'd like to see on the new main book (doesn't neccessarily have to be a phb btw). On the left side we got pieces of a ruin, or you could say pieces of a dungeon. And on the right we got an awesome dragon. A Dungeon. And a...

    Takin' a Stab at Spells...

I'd like a mix of 4E and OD&D. Short mechanical statblock plus short fluff text. Well, I'd like my version. :) Shameless self plug again: -YRUSirius

    Which stat for init?

Who goes first depends on reflexes -> dexterity. Seeing someone first depends on perception-> wisdom. -YRUSirius

    Takin' a Stab at Spells...

Yeah, it's enough. You don't need more information for a magic missile spell that shots a bolt of force for 2d4 damage in 50 feet range and hits automatically. This is what you get, this is what to expect. How the bolt of force looks like isn't that important to clutter up the spell...

    April 3rd, Rule of 3

Use common sense, people. A housecat never killed a person to my knowledge. I don't care what the monster manual says about the 'damage' it can do... just use common sense... And if a 'minion'/'weaksauce monster' gets hit by a fist of a character he get's knocked down in the first round...

    Takin' a Stab at Spells...

Well, actually yes I can. You'd be wondering how many non-gamers would shudder at the length of this spell description and just ask the DM what it does. There's a reason why Apple products have become so popular with the mainstream. And D&D Next is about accessibility to broaden the market...

I don't know if this is a thing...

Here's the "Does Format Matter?" blog entry by Robert Schwalb that was mentioned: Does Format Matter? Note the pdf at the bottom for 4E spells and maneuvers in 3E formating. I especially like the "Tide of Iron" fighter exploit on the second page. So much easier to understand after the first...

    Takin' a Stab at Spells...

Well that's an editing mistake. We shouldn't keep null entries just to prevent these mistakes. No entry means it's using the standard rules that are explained in the beginning of the magic chapter or somewhere else. If a web spell has no duration then it's simply an editing mistake. :) -YRUSirius

    April 3rd, Rule of 3

A level 1 commoner has 1 hit point? And a table does 1 hit point to him if the commoner whacks his knee at it? Wha-wha-what? :P Linking damage to to hit points is pretty easy though, an attack with a dagger can kill a 4 hit point commoner, even a 8 hit point commoner if the attacker get's a...

    Takin' a Stab at Spells...

This thread isn't about the specifics of the spells though,it's about the formating of the spell block. :) -YRUSirius

I don't know if this is a thing...

I like the points Ratskinner has brought up (remove redundancy, write concise spell description), so here's another one of my dream spell write-ups: Burning Hands Evocation * Fire Area: 25-foot blast Saving Throw: Dexterity (miss halves) A cone of searing flames shoots from your fingertips...

    April 17, rule of 3

My concern for weapon damage type is that it might not come up very often after all. One example that get's to my mind instantly are skeletons that are best dealt with with bludgeoning weapons. But what else? Attaching another statistic to a weapon just for one monster? -YRUSirius

    Takin' a Stab at Spells...

I don't feel that's really relevant for the purpose of this thread, because it's all a question about how you balance the spells with each other. Either you lessen the effect of sleep, or you improve the effect of magic missile. Or you do something like give every wizard a free at-will magic...

    Takin' a Stab at Spells...

I'd remove the Standard Action entry, because if casting a spell is a standard action as a rule you only have to give entries for the exceptions of that. -YRUSirius

    Takin' a Stab at Spells...

I'd like to get rid of superfluous entries like the "Duration" entry for Magic Missle. Not every spell needs every entry. At the same time I'd include the Effect entry as the first sentence in the spell description. Specific mechanics aside (I like a magic missile that could miss :)); this is...
