    Arriving at ability scores

Yup, you're right. The first method became always the standard though. :) In 4E it was the array, in the editions before it, it was rolling dice (more or less random, given the edition). So 4E 'introduced' the array as standard. :P -YRUSirius

The Basic Math of D&D 5: Maximum Points

I don't like the 'tier' bonuses on the 11th and 21st level. It just makes the numbers bigger without any need. We'll have a flatter math baseline anyways, so just leave this out. :) Did you notice that these characters won't be able to have any penalties? I want character penalties back. :)...

    Arriving at ability scores

Yeah, that's something that 4E 'introduced'. At first I thought, yeah no dice rolling for character generation, but the resulting characters had no weaknesses and even the greatest of all heroes should have an Achilles' heel to let them shine with their strengths despite his shortcommings. This...

    Are ability scores really needed?

I'm sorry, but abilities ARE D&D. -YRUSirius

    April 3rd, Rule of 3

Does anyone really think that mainstream casuals need anything more complex than hit points? The concept of life points is so easy to grasp and so ingrained in the minds of gamers all over the world (doesn't matter which coloeur), every one can understand them. If you confront a casual gamer...

    Which stat for init?

I'd use the pretty casual style of initiative rules that Chris Perkins used in all his video sessions and podcasts with celebrity gamers: One initiative roll at the start of the combat, which is basically just a dexterity roll. Highest number goes first. THEN the turn just goes clockwise. DM...

The Basic Math of D&D 5: Maximum Points

I really like the assumption that (in average) it should take 1 round for a level 1 character to kill a level 1 monster; so that 4 level 1 characters should take 2 combat rounds to mop the floor with 8 goblins (standard starter monsters that act like minions, gives me the LotR style cinematic...

Does the game need 9 spell levels?

20 spell slots can be pretty easy to handle in the low levels (1-10), if you get a new spell from the appropriate level every new level. Say at level 5 you get 1 level 1 spell, 1 level 2 spell, 1 level 3 spell, 1 level 4 spell and finally 1 level 5 spell. High levels could prove to be a little...

Does the game need 9 spell levels?

Yeah, I'd like to see 20 spell levels. Good, easy and simple for starters. -YRUSirius

    D&D 5E (2014) A Thought about 5e Multi-classing...

In my own version of D&D next I'm trying to write right now (with the help of all the D&D next previews) I go the 3E multi-classing way, but un-frontload the classes. Their main class features are getting spread out over the first 3 levels (1st level: 1 main class feature, 1 minor class feature...

    DnD Podcast April 13

So the base core will kinda resemble Basic D&D, then we get classes that will kinda resemble AD&D 2nd edition classes (with more high level class features for fighters and rogues and at-will magic 'tricks' and spells for wizards and clerics like 3rd and 4th edition) and on top of that optimizers...

Which Kobold feels right to You?

I like my kobolds as the dragonkobolds of 3E and 4E, if I want to have any kobolds at all. :) But I feel the 3E and 4E kobolds (minions) are too hard to hit for 1st level characters and doing too much damage. Yeah, I know they aren't that hard to hit at all, but at 1st level I want my small...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog: Beyond Class & Race

I expect themes to replace prestige classes/paragon paths as the main focus for splat books etc. Rules that play fast, play well, prep fast, prep easy, prep well ARE elegant rules in my eyes. :) That's where I'm coming from. :) I find the idea of things like a Wizard(assassin) particularly...
