10-18-2011 Legends and Lore - Preserving the Past

"It's important, I think, to acknowledge and preserve the game's roots. Even as we create new material for the latest product, we should be looking backward to see if there are lessons to be remembered or bits of the past to bring forward" Kind of covers it there. If 5e is at the stage of...

Evil Campaigns: How do you feel about them?

The Godfather just shades it for me :) 'values, attachments' . . . and plenty of consequences for the bad guys in both movies. For a cynical solo TPK maybe roll-up the mates, cousins, brothers, betrothed and pass them to the players with dead PCs - along with a rumour the size of a beacon...

New Legends and Lore: Live Together, Die Alone

There's kind of an existing mechanic for this. Drop four black puddings into any given encounter and players seem to come over all co-operative in no time at all.

New Legends and Lore: Live Together, Die Alone

Another Monte Cook post at WotC. Interesting. All for playing as a team; but I draw the line at collective buffing and preening makeovers before every encounter :)

    Dilemna: Should I Quit RPGs?

You mention a 'what you really want to do' as politics. Bet there's a few more what you want to dos out there - but as an example there's nothing ruling you out of politics as a whole. The presidency might be a long way off, but campaigns need organised on many levels, political blogs need...

    Home-brewing Rules

It's always going to be necessary to house rule occasionally, as there's always going to be a player who can manipulate a magic item to game breaking effect

What's wrong with scaling (and levels, bonuses, advancement, etc)?

About the only paladin I ever had for ages earned his +3 swords of kewlness and then some. He ain't giving it back! Especially after that bloody pit fiend dropped half a mountain on him.

Monte Cooks First Legends and Lore

Different perspectives :) The blog post appears to be saying 'we have mechanics for perception, but they're not all they could be. If we standardize and think through those mechanics we can have a better set of mechanics for that side of the game - and these don't need to slow play if they're...

Monte Cooks First Legends and Lore

Too early to say, but it looks like further mechanisation. Used to be GMs were moderators who turned to the books for crunch, but generally handled skills use and exploration by themselves. The combat crunch was then expended before skills use was also mechanised. Now exploration seems to be up...
