    What's your VTT of choice?

I use Owlbear Rodeo often and have since covid but I’ve been wanting to learn more about Foundry. I have an instance up on my raspberry pi I toy around with. Often I just use discord with maybe some screenshots of maps to give people an idea what’s going on. We really can get as basic or...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

My Sunday group is playing Tales of the Valiant and I really dig it. It’s still crunchier than 2014 D&D but not as super heroic as D&D 2024. The monster design is great. There’s a ton of great material in the Gamemasters Guide. The luck and doom systems are really cool. I think You’ve encounter...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Check out Band of Blades. It’s a more fantasy sword and sorcery take on Blades.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

One thing this misses is that WOTC was happy enough with the OGL to release the 5.1 SRD under it in 2016. So sixteen years later, they still supported the OGL. It wasn’t hated the minute it came out — WOTCs own attitudes (or more likely the people in power at the time) changed over the years...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

A lot of folks here seem to be trying to talk about how other people feel about D&D which we can't really know in the end. I expect many attribute their own feelings to others. The OGL didn't bother me that much – I bet it didn't bother other people that much. But we can talk about how we feel...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I had tons of people who never really talked to me about D&D news bring up the OGL. These folks aren’t into the hobby at all but they heard about it and they asked me about it. It was wild.

WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

Whether WOTC was seeking feedback for real or just pushing their intentions secretly to other big 5e publishers doesn't really matter. The whole thing hinged on one thing: breaking the existing OGL. There's no way you can say that the original OGL wasn't intended to be perpetual. The creators of...

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

They have four different CR 8 cultists. I love cultists but even I didn’t need four different CR 8 cultists. I’m also sad the base CR2 cult fanatic isnt super useful with its main action being tied to melee and half of its DPR being tied up in a spell you have to look up. The priest stat block...

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

There is a table that shows you which stat block you can use to replace one in the 2014 MM but they’re far from the same.

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

I got my review copy of the 2024 Monster Manual yesterday. Like renaming “race” to “species”, removing orcs from the Monster Manual feels like WOTC sidestepped the real issue. The problem wasn’t just orcs — the problem is treating any whole sentient species as all bad when it comes to the...

    Independent Spaces for RPG Discourse

Im giving Bluesky the benefit of the doubt that they won’t fully enshittify before someone else stands up a compatible atproto instance. They are, at least, not pushing an opaque algorithm of their own.

A review of Shadowdark: Streamlined Modern OSR

I ran a long campaign for Shadowdark and it worked just fine. Lots more character death than 5e but the players were into it. After our thirteen month weekly campaign was done I asked if they’d play it again and all said yes. On the surface, it makes sense to assume Shadowdark wouldn’t work...

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

They both clearly stated their design preference for abstract distances in combat, something I too learned to love through 13th Age after years of gridded combat in 3e and 4e. As have many other RPGs including the four-time-ENNIE-winning Shadowdark. My personal favorite is the ICRPG "banana"...

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

You think they left it out by accident? Or "huge oversight" means "I don't like it"?

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

Yes he was. Sorry, I didn't make the distinction between design team and development team. But he has more insider info about 4e than anyone else in this thread it seems.

I have the honor of having designed the most powerful 4e monster ever published by WOTC -- Cryonax. A level 35 solo who definitely put the pressure on 30th level 4e characters. You can find him on DriveThruRPG.

Just in case anyone here doesn't already know this, if you love 4e, please check out 13th Age. It's absolutely awesome. I can't wait for the next version to come out and, unlike 4e, it had no big VP oversight pushing it in the wrong direction.

You're not alone. I loved the Essentials point. Combat was fast. Encounters were better balanced. Monsters were great.
