How is a vampire possibly worth +8 LA?

No. High LA are reserved for creatures that are either extraordinarily powerful and needs them to prevent everyone from wanting to play them. Or for creatures having special powers that can completely :):):):) up a game if taken advantage of to the fullest (which at least some players are able...

How is a vampire possibly worth +8 LA?

Exactly. And that is why the ECL of +8 should ring a warning bell. As I stated above I consider a high ECL a sign that essentially reads "Stop and think real hard, this creature is likely a hassle in normal games and we have to consider if it will fit into ours". A vampire is a powerful being...

How is a vampire possibly worth +8 LA?

Even if you might like that, that is simply not the way it is. Some abilities, creatures, templates etc. tends to to be fun when a opponent has them but breaks the game when in the players hands. Dominate at will, the vampire spawn thingie and energy drain are abilities that can bend some types...

How is a vampire possibly worth +8 LA?

People play D&D in all kinds of ways. If you play a back to the dungeon, kill it all, loot it all kind of game, a vampire won't be pulling his weight (but why would a vampire even be there in the first place). If you play a urban based, socially plot driven, no railroading kind of game a...

Is this fair? -- predict the general opinion

It will depend on peoples usual playing styles. Experienced hard core multiple editions gamers will find that the monk was needlessly careless. Their thought will be along the lines of "Why didn't he just tie a rope to the lever and back up 50-100 ft. before pulling." Players with less...

    3.5 vs Rolemaster

I remember the fumble result that had me rolling around laughing. It was on the lance fumble table, and had the plate mail wearing knight doing a lance charge ending up polevaulting himself 30+ ft. into the air and then hitting the ground. Hard. The enemies even took a moment to clap at the...

    3.5E version of a 2e character concept?

-Chaotic good: Check. Thats as hard as choosing it. -Longsword: Check. All elves can use longswords in 3ed regardless of class. -Sneakyness: For your concept it requires either Rogue or Ranger levels. See below for details. -low key spells and some bangers: This will depend on your overall...

Which is better: per encounter or per day?

I don't like X/whatever. I strongly prefer a design aproach that curcumvents that type of abilities. Like the token abilities in Iron heroes. Granted they turn out to be sort of X/encounter, but in a much more interesting way.

Help me brainstorm a Gestalt Monk/Bard (or Rogue)

If I where you I would look long and hard at the 3.5 versions of both the bard and monk class. They got a much needed boost with that revision. Especially the bard I think is way more attractive than before. And at least the monks flurry mechanically works better with the new rules.

    Predict this encounter

As to the question. In general Giants are easy prey for any mind affecting magic. They have pretty crappy will saves and a Hold monster is likely to be the end of it. Without magical back-up or surprise on their side those two giants should have been a relatively easy encounter.

Designing a new campaign: Brainstorm stage, Focus wanted

Only if there are enough survivors that the blacksmith has someone to teach his craft too. And if he has acces to a smithy with tools. And he has the time to do so instead of hunting, farming, fleeing and so on. If most of the surface life was wiped out all these things are by no means sure. It...

Designing a new campaign: Brainstorm stage, Focus wanted

One implication of an ELE is that most trades/crafts/professions/knowledges would more or less dissapear. And with them so would civilisation. With written knowledge and instructions gone, trained professionals dead or without anyone/tools/time to pass their abilities to the survivors will soon...

Dear post#3132721, don't blame me. I'm just the interpreter.

Huh? Right back at you :) In my 6 years of DM'ing 3ed I have never found Dragons lacking in power. In my experience they are the toughest critters by their CR of all. I've seen demons die to hp deficiency, giants succumb to confusions and holds and dead humanoids in large piles. But dragons...

What level is appropriate to encounter save or die effects?

Of course it doesn't have to, but it should be the common situation. It's true that there are spiders and snakes that are potetially lethal. But their numbers are small compared to those that are just painful/distraction to humans. And yes a small, but infamous unimaginable poisoneous creature...

What level is appropriate to encounter save or die effects?

I don't use save or die effects. Maybe I would if I allowed raising the dead. I also find it bad design that save or die effects increase in number as levels go up, IMO characters are supposed to get tougher and harder to kill with levels. In effect the situation ends up the other way around...

    The New Design Philosophy?

Are you serious?. Hold person was a 2nd level Cleric spell that essentially was a Save or Die spell. At the level it entered the game there was no counter against it, 3rd level casters can't cast Freedom or Dispel magic. And in a chaotic shifting melee it is not even sure your friendly...

conducting a paternity test in D&D

Without magic it can't be done in a D&D world. Simple as that. It wasn't until the 1980's that paternity tests by blood reached an accuracy that makes them usable. It requires a lot of knowledge about genetics, the immune system and heritability. The surest thing will be a Commune spell...

    The New Design Philosophy?

Ok. Guess we will have to disagree completely about what CR is/should be and how it is applied by the dm. Could you explain to me please how you would judge the CR of a creature like the Ogre mage or Vampire taking into account their non-combat ability. Or is your position that CR shouldn't...

    The New Design Philosophy?

Are you reading what we are posting? Those "mastermind" abilities will create obstacles that will be resolved by themselves, without the mastermind being present, being of their own CR, giving their own XP. There is absolutely no need for that kind of ability to be accounted into the...

    The New Design Philosophy?

No. That is an ADVANTAGE of the CR system. That way your piddly mastermind can create more encounters for the players. They then get rewarded (including with XP) for handling along the way, but don't get an undue amount of XP when they finally corner and defeat the relatively weak mastermind in...
