I'm going to steal Gneech's example and modify it lightly. I rolled dice the old fashioned way, by hand. Round One They make Initiative checks. Claire rolls 13, for a total of 20. Narrin rolls a 9, for a total of 11. Claire opens up with Hold person. Narrin attempts a Will save vs. DC 16...

Thanks Edena, but it's not really my template. It seems to be a bastardized version of the DMG2 one. Another, IMO, helpful rule in 3ed is the "take 10" one. In a situation like the one you are describing I would most often use that. So both characters take 10 on their skills until they are very...

Yeah, however... I don't know how you generated those ability scores, but the core standard array is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. So it's more likely that they will look something like this. *Note I had to change the fighter a bit as he could no longer take two-weapon fighting. You also need to...

I can try. Your table of when we acquire feats is correct, but the ones we gain on 3, 6, 9 and so on must be picked from a small selection. That selection is determined by race and cultural background. For instance a Dwarf might have the option of taking: Bullheaded (+1 Will saves; +2...

I would not agree that Feats are the balancing point or the replacement of classes. IMO it does not even change the balance much to dole out more feats. In one game I am participating in we agreed on everybody gaining a feat each level. Every third feat (3, 6, 9 etc.) must be chosen from a small...

Well thats a very long list of feats. While they are all good I hardly think a fighter needs all of them. Remember you can still try many of those tricks (disarm, trip etc.) without the feats. You are just not as good at it. In my experience it pays of to specialise in D&D. You choose something...

Iron Heroes General Discussion: why do you like or dislike Iron Heroes?

You asked me in another thread to go to this one and commment, so I will do my best. I have DM'ed a new Iron heroes game for a couple of months now and the positives that spring to mind are. 1. No more magic item dependency. In fact no magic items at all so far. Should I ever introduce them...

Would you use Armor as DR Why? Why use it for AC?

So do I. Acutally I don't intend to ever play D&D again, now that I have Iron Heroes. It fits my groups style of gaming and mine as a DM infinitely better than vanilla D&D. That said armor still tends to get a non-issue in Iron heroes as levels fly by. We will likely end up increasing the DR of...

Would you use Armor as DR Why? Why use it for AC?

This assumption only holds true at low levels. Even DR 8/- from a full plate has little effect if you are fighting giants, huge dragons and so on. These types of monsters do so much damage on each attack that even subtrating 8 points is less protection than increasing your AC by 8 (and thereby...

    Rules for knockouts

The problem is that unconcious equals being dead in D&D. So your mechanic is in effect a one hit kill option. And one with a potentially big DC. IMO you can not simulate these kind of effects without replacing the HP system with something else. The problem remains though. It needs to be...

In practise the spiked chain wielder gets really bad ass (and "broken" to use a D&D 3ed expression) as soon as his arcane buddy casts enlarge/polymorph. He now has 5-15 ft. reach, usually gets higher strength and in addition a +4 size bonus to trips and disarms. With combat reflexes this often...

    Soulknife Tweaks

Ehhmm. It looks mighty good to me. Try comparing to the Dodge feat that gives +1 AC vs. one opponent. In fact I see two possible scenarios. 1. The feat stacks with armor. This will IMO make the feat way to good. 2. The feat does not stack with armor. Still a strong feat, but as Soulblades can...

Making Melee Characters Useful at High Levels

If you follow D&D logic any melee fighter should be enlarged in almost any fight from level 1+ and polymorphed into a troll/stone giant/other large high str monster from level 7+. Its just that much af an advantage. At level 16 the barbarian should expect a ton of buffs from his party (among...

Shackled City Epic: "Vengeance" (story concluded)

Hehe. Here you are touching upon one of my major quibbles with D&D (or potentially any gaming system). Characters that go from being fresh apprentices to master wizards, fighters, paladins etc. in such short time spans. Lately in my own games I have begun to insert long periods of time where...

    Gay PCs or NPCs

I once played a bisexual, and quite flamboyantly so, master duelist and swashbuckler. It was fun and everybody was ok with it. He even sometimes used his reputation to annoy and unsettle opponents. I don't even see why it could or should be a problem. At least none of the people I game with...

Shackled City Epic: "Vengeance" (story concluded)

I just tried to add up the heros equipment value and compare to the suggested wealth at their level. No wonder they are struggling. You are using an official campaign that assumes the PC's have the suggested wealth and the possibility of trading to the equipment they really need. I just did the...

Shackled City Epic: "Vengeance" (story concluded)

I second that notion, simply because that is how most games I have played or DM'ed goes at times. It may not be often, but occasionally the players just do the right thing or the opposition is not really a challenge. Not so for your poor heroes ;) for them every fight seems to overmatch them...

Useing Dexterity to hit --> everytime.

If you are using that rule I don't think the weapons weight in pounds is the way to go. That would mean any character with str 12+ can use dex with every normal weapon. A simple solution would be require Str = double (or even triple) the weight in pounds. That way it requires superhuman strength...

Useing Dexterity to hit --> everytime.

Yes. By spending one of your two valuable Character Traits to do so. And that trait is under scrutiny by many of those who play Iron heroes as almost every published build uses it. Personally I fail to see how agility helps you more than strength when swinging your 12 pound Greataxe or Halberd.
