New player and even newer DM struggling with another player...

Then put the impetus back on the other players. Have one of their characters take up an older brother role (especially appropriate for the older brother player) and guide the character away from his current path.

New player and even newer DM struggling with another player...

Establish boundaries. I DM for my kids a lot and just as with raising the little buggers, they need boundaries on their gaming as well. First and foremost, don't allow evil alignments. For younger players, the "PCs are the good guys" aspect of the game really needs to be reinforced. Save the...

    [OOC] [D&D 3.5: FR] Silverdale

Small write-ups aren't a problem, its the transfer of whole books that I tend to object to. ;) However, that said, I tend to avoid even the small write-ups as well because it adds to mental processor space. I know where to find everything for the most part in the books on my shelf. If I have...

What monster abilities do you hate and why?

A hearty second on the interrupt abilities of some critters in 4E, at least from the DM side of the screen as I keep forgetting about them, thus making the combats easier than they ought to be. I've also run into severe player resentment in nearly all editions whenever a monster uses a charm or...

    [OOC] [D&D 3.5: FR] Silverdale

Ooh, lots of questions. I like questions. :D Too bad a lot of the answers are some variatio of "no." Sorry about that. Alrighty, first no PHB2. See the first post for the allowed book list. That also means no Player's Guide to Faerun (sorry Myth). As for "what type of dwarf" yes, I...

D&D 4E Off the Grid: 4E without minis or maps...

I've played nearly every edition of D&D (I skipped AD&D 1st edition) and combat has always been narrative. In all cases, position and movement and other details were either simply guesstimated or handwaved in favor of what made a good story.

D&D 4E Off the Grid: 4E without minis or maps...

I've played with groups that keep their characters on clipboards with no table in sight, the players sprawled out on easy chairs and couches. And yet, D&D is still the game of choice.

    [OOC] [D&D 3.5: FR] Silverdale

PM me your e-mail and I'll send the half-vampire progression that way (EN World is finicky about attachments sometimes). The vampire progression that I use can be found here. A progression for Vampire Spawn can be found on page 39 of Libris Mortis. Regarding Vow of Poverty, though I do have...

D&D 4E Off the Grid: 4E without minis or maps...

Aulirophile, let's assume that 4th Edition is the only option on the table for whatever reason (new players, simple majority preference, whatever). Does 4E combat have to be highly tactical? Conversely, can it be highly tactical without maps and minis? Crothian, what page do the players and...

D&D 4E Off the Grid: 4E without minis or maps...

Can it be done? Can 4th Edition be played with narrative style combat? If so, how have you gone about doing it? In what ways must the rules be adapted to take the game "Off the Grid?"
